Help needed my welder isnt working!

heya,
im very new to welding and in much need for some help!

I have a super mig 160 and my welder seemed to be not working,

ive put my gas, on my wire speed and the current to the mig,
and when i pull the trigger it feeds the wire and u can hear the gas but the electro current isnt working to create the weld!!!


ive only ever used the portable welders so im HIGHLY novice to the BOC bottles and regulator etc!


Ive read around some problems like a break in the earth on the touch and or the earth cable,

ive tried cleaning the earth up and connecting it to my sheet of mild steal , but nothing please can anyone help?

Hi,

have you got a voltmeter?

If so, connect it between the torch tip and the earth lead and see if there's a voltage there when you press the trigger.

Start on maximum AC volts range and wind it down slowly until you get a reading. If you don't see anything then start again on maximum DC voltage and wind it down until you see, hopefully, 20 - 40 volts.

annoyingly i dont have a volt meter i manged to run over it when i was in the work shop, any other things i could check 1st before i buy another one?

maybe take the cover off and see it there is any fuses that might have gone etc hard to test unless you have multimeter unless you make a circuit with battery buzzer etc and test the fuse after it has been removed that way.

Hi,

a cheapo meter would only be a couple of pounds, ebay, local market, etc.

But if you're taking the top off the welder you could check for any loose wires, anything that looks 'burnt', etc.

Did it stop working while you were using it or was it put away OK and the fault was there next time you tried it?

I'm not familar with that model...could it be something daft like a reset button (popped due to overheating, etc)?

Heya All, Ive checked a volt meter and it seems to be FINE BUT STILL DOESNT WORK!!!

GRRR!!!


Is there anyone who could look at it for me obviously using my gas!!! in the local area , and surrounding areas (Im in Banstead poste code SM7 )
WILLING TO TRAVEL 10 / 15 ish Miles in any direction from SM7

will pay for your time!

So you've connected a voltmeter between the earth clamp and the contact tip, you've turned it on, pulled the trigger and the meter has shown a DC voltage but it still doesn't work?
What reading did the meter show?
