Help need (Oh! and hello!)

Hi,
First visit to this forum and hope it's not an imposition but I need some help and it was suggested that I try here. If I paste the note I put on the Land Rover forum you'll get the gist:

I need to find somebody to weld up an aluminium bracket on a wheelchair in the Yorkshire/North Lincolnshire area.

A friend asked me for help this afternoon, his daughter's wheelchair has cracked one of the X member brackets. Thought it'd be easy but when I looked closer it's aluminium. My alloy welding is very 'hit and miss' and I don't feel confident enough to do a good job.

The wheelchair's Spanish made and spares will take time to arrive so we need to do something, even if it's just a temporary fix. I'm not going to let this go, even if it means fabricating the whole piece from steel (Sue is stuck without her wheels) but as first option does anybody know of somewhere we could get this welded please?

Sorry. no. It's one side of the scissor under the seat. About 1" square bar with a U shaped piece (about 2mm thick) butt welded to the end. The U rotates about the lower frame when the chair is folded s I can't bolt it. It's failed outside the current weld.

Hi,

I'm in North Lincs but not geared up for alluminium. I've only ever worked with mild steel.

If you need help making up a similar part in mild steel then ask away. I have a rough old lathe that works if anything needs turning, etc.

Where are you? Can you post photographs of the part thats broken, etc?

Oi.
Not really geared up for ally either i am afraid. Theres a lad opposite me who would do it, but he's very busy at the moment - otherwise he would have done it no problem.

hi rich, well maybe you have the welding gear to do this?? maybe you could fine some who has the exp to do this but not the gear to help.

it worth a shot. (sorry i can't help i don't know how to weld ally and i'am in Canada)

Thanks for the replies, I'm in Snaith (between Goole and Selby). travels no problem, within reason, you're on the spot when somebody asks for help with such a good cause.
I've got the gear, but not the knack. My alloy welding takes anything from 2" to 2' before I get the settings right. Not much use when there's only 1" on three sides.
Think I'll knock up a copy in mild steel. If this works I'll give the alloy original a go on the basis that nothings lost.
