Help me out with a name.

Hopefully not age related, but I can't remember the name for a surform/file I had and I need to replace.

Length and width as a 10" (ish) surform blade. It was flat, about 5mm thick and had shallow crescent shaped 'teeth' each of which was the full width of the blade. Hard enough to be used to dress cold chisels to an almost polished finish after grinding.

That's a Dreadnought file. I've only ever used them for car body work though.

I think that I still have one, fits to a frame with a turnbuckle on top so that the blade can be bowed or hollowed to suit the job,

Yep, that's the one I have. Very useful tool.

Thanks gents, much appreciated. Dreadnought was the name I couldn't remember, clicked as soon as I read it here. Not sure if they're harder than a body file, but they do look the same. Dreadnought file.

Yes they are, if you drop a body file they can shatter the drednoughts dont

It's no help at all but my big brother referred to every file as a "half round 2nd cut flat b*****d rasp".
