Help me find these belts, please

After seeing @skotl's thread asking for help to identify his timing pulley and @Kram's being a belt ninja, I was hoping I could get some help getting replacement belts for my Semco mill.

Belt 1 - Roulunds Roflex-Vari 38J0890HR 435 and there is also 0270 printed on the belt.

It appears that the inside length is about 830mm, the width is ~37mm and the depth/section height is ~12.5mm.


Belt 2 - MBL-Synchrosar G D22 N8161

Belt width ~25.39mm
Teeth = 46

Why oh why are these numbers and printed stuff not standardised on belts?!

The first belt is not a timing belt. It is a variable speed belt. Basically the same as a ribbed V belt. I don't think the teeth are important on that one

Ah I missed that, V belts you need the width and height. SPA types are 13mm, SPB, C D etc.. get wider but so does the depth. I dont see any 37mm by 1/2"
For ribbed belts, (better grip on small dia pulleys) its Xpa insead of Spa.

Found it, The first belt is a E width belt, so code would be XPE followed by the length.

From what I remember, somr lengths are measured by the pitch diameter rather than inner/outer circumference, so somewhat between the two values.

However looking again at the code, 38J0890HR, I think that means 38mm width and 890 pitch diameter or outer diameter. Can you measure the OD?

The OD of the Roulunds ROFLEX-VARI = ~885 - 890mm.

Getting around 885mm if I measure in the centre of the belt (it looks a little concave) and about 990mm if I measure on the outside edge.

This is the closest I can find so far.

However, the section height is only 10mm and on mine it is ~12.57mm.

I think I might have found the second belt.

I found a place that said the Sharp milling machines (Semco was sold as Sharp in the USA) uses a "230H-100 Timing Belt"

One of the first results brought this up.

At £8.50 shipped it is worth a punt.

However, I am really after the first variable speed belt, the current timing belt in the Semco looks ok and besides, the timing belt only gets used when the mill is in low gear.

Buying belts is a nightmare

A bricks and mortar belt store is definitely the way to go if you have one local to you.

I have now spent an embarrassingly long time searching for belts.

I found a website in the USA selling Sharp variable speed belts. It is for the 3hp version of the Sharp milling machine.

The belt is a 2428v345k.

Unfortunately, no belt specifications.

That belt can be ordered on Amazon but it will be an expensive exercise if it does not fit.

It appears that the 2428v345k belt is slightly shorter than the one I have currently. I am thinking that it *should" work but I may lose a little bit of speed adjustment (which is not a problem as the VFD can be used to compensate).

I have not yet decided if I want to take the gamble.

Best to phone a few belt suppliers as E secrion seem rare or not commonly sold online.

May be cheaper to get new pulleys to suit a more common belt, poly V type were recommended on here for anything new.

What kind of power and speed is the belt running, E section is at the high end. It might run ok with a double B or C section belts and pulleys which are much easier to get.

I did have a look for the powertwist/nutlink belts but they only do it in smaller sizes, and its no good if you need to reverse, and very expensive.

It is variable speed pulleys. It will definitely be much more expensive to replace those than to just get a belt.

The pulleys go closer and further away from each other to adjust the speed.

Ah nice, that explains the choice of belt then.

You .ay have some luck searching for cvt belts however most seem to be automotive and dont lost sizes. There was a page on Gates website that had sizes.

Take it to your local belt supplier and they will be able to tell you exactly what it is, my local place are experts with 30+ years of experience
