help!!!!!!! its all gone wrong aarrrrrrrrrr

hi please HELP me!! I have just got a second hand welder a sealey supermig185 it has come with a disposable bottle when I tried to weld (i`m a complete novice) it just splatters no pool no penetration it just sits on top i have tried all setting right up to 6 I can hear gas coming out but cant feel it (should I?) the bottle has iced over so its got to be working ????? have I got a lemon or am i just being dumb

metal is clean it 3mm steel plate any ideas

sounds like no gas to me those bottles dont last you need 10 litres per minute flow so wok out how many litres the bottles ie 100 litre bottle ten miutes welding time

You should be able to feel the gas coming out of the nozzle/tip shield, listen to were the gas sound is coming from and look for a leak, you may have to remove the covers.

Where abouts in Essex do you reside???

thanks i was hoping it was that i don't know how much is left in it as it was just cable tied on to the back he said it had gas but probably not i was going to get a proper bottle of argonsheld but wonted to make sure it worked first before i spent more money on it but i might just bite the bullet and get one anyone know of a gas supplier in brentwood upminster area ??????

usually with no gas the attempted weld will be rough and full of holes

no these are just balls that just sit on top i just checked again there is gas coming out the end i have a feeling its the welk holding the handle but this was done on setting 4 with half speed wire feed it just splatters and then wire gets stuck in the tip and i have to pull it out with pliers

Perhaps you could try a new liner and a new tip. The liner could be causing the wire to stick a bit and this would allow the wire to burn back to the tip and stick. The liner could be causing an irregular feed, this could explain the spatter.

The plate looks like it might be galvanised which could cause a bit of grief.

It has new tips i got a new swan neck for the gun as it was broke thats why it was £100 when i got the swan neck and tips they were called hobby stuff it has a screw on shrould and little bass looking tips that are 5mm thread could it be the euro gun underrated or wrong for the welder?????

it is galv but i went over it with a wire brush attachment on my grinder and got it back to metal but might be a small bit left

The wire brush might have just polished the galv and made it look a bit different. You can just see the sort of white'ish deposit that the galv gives off. When trying to weld galv it can look a bit like what's happening on your plate. Try a grinding disc over it.

I'd not be in a rush to buy new machinery - I suspect the fellow holding the handle.

For the picture my guess is the torch was too far from the work, travel speed was too high, and wire speed was maybe not high enough. Try going through the pages in this link with those things in mind: http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/tutorial.htm

For galv you really need to grind it off back to bare metal. The fumes can be very nasty (welders flu), and it isn't easy to weld.

Lol, yeah! some sound advice from Malc there!
Try if you can find some clean metal to practise on...galv's nasty! It's though to weld even with experience! and it can make you feel very sick!
Keep at it mate! it'll work out with some practise!

Not that I am an expert by any means but I think Malcom has pretty much said it all. Definately check out the link he gave you, I could weld a bit before going through it all and I still learned an awful lot from it. Keep trying and keep asking questions.
