That's sounding more hopeful Robert! Was inspired to ring an old friend who knows all sorts about all sorts (known as the mad inventor - computers, electronics, automata, welding, mechanics...you name it, he will explain how it works and probably make a working model out of scrap while he's talking!), he echoed almost exactly what you have said and also said he'd try and drop by to have a look and advise. I've emailed him a copy of the wiring schematic (which he will understand!) and fingers crossed he'll be able to sort me out.
Still open to ideas/advise as getting him here could take a while even though he's only about 25 miles away. A big thanks for your time

See if your pal with USAF contact can talk to some of the base married quarters maintenence people . They should have the complete caboodle so you only need a correct extension to plug & play

shame! You're just a tad further than the mad inventor.

I'll update this thread when I get it sorted. I feel more confident now that it's easily manageable without forking out too much money.

Only just seen all these helpful replies about the Amana.
I've checked the plate inside the door and it gives the following info;
3 wire circuit
120/240 v
24 amp
60hz
5400 watts
.

i think i would look for a uk spec heater to replace the one in it and simplify things 5400 watts not far off the full capacity of 2, 13 amp sockets here in the uk
the above spec of 24amp must be at 240 volts
and double at 120 volts
