Thanks micheal real help as i dont have a clue about the welding helmets do you have to change the lense or any thing at all on it and does it full protect your eyes? as im new to welding and i am glue less just want to learn help please thanks james
I would second the above mask...excellent value & decent enough quality for occasional users
the mask is always shade 4, enough to prevent any problems if the main filter does not darken quickly & gives 100% ( or near enough) UV protection.
The shade adjustment for welding is set between 9--13(i think?) and is suitable for all electric welding ...arc, tig and mig.... just choose a comfortable shade and the lens will darken automatically as soon as the arc is struck.... no need to change filters for different operations or lighting conditions.
The only part you occasionally need to change are the lens protectors...clear plastic sheet in front of the lens to prevent weld spatter or scratches etc from damaging it.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'do you have to change the lense or any thing at all on it' - the lens automatically darkens as soon as the arc is struck. They've proven reliable over the year we've had them.
The protection seems perfectly OK - even if it were to fail to darken, the lens would still protect your eyes from the UV. The shade control on the outside of the helmet varies the darkness of the darkened state to suit the arc and the dials on the inside set the sensitivity (so that it doesn't switch every time the sun reflects off the torch shroud for example) and delay (the time it takes to go light again). It's solar powered so you don't have to worry about batteries.
As a newbie myself (although after a year's welding on my VW, I feel like a veteran!), the auto-darkening helmet is worth its weight in gold as you can see the workpiece the whole time. Even when using a helmet with a flip-down lens, I found it difficult to keep the torch in position whilst flipping down the lens.
thanks for the advice mike and micheal its helped me out loads i think i am going to take your advice and ivest in the helment it should make welding easyier.
