Hello everyone,

I dabbled in gas and arc welding many moons ago during my apprenticeship but nothing since. I am currently restoring a 1958 Austin 101 van which needs a fair bit of welding. I went out to buy a mig welder recently but there were so many to choose from the question was where do I start?

Budget will be the biggest issue Gerry.
Do you envisage doing other welding apart from vehicles?

I decided to write a page about which welder to buy, but realised it was a bit complex so gave up at this: http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/buying.htm

Amps are easy - go with the welder that will do the thickness you are likely to want to weld.

After that there are a few more issues - if you want to rebuild a whole rusty car you'd be looking at a big bottle of shielding gas, and would want somewhere to mount it on the welder. Bottle shelves start appearing on the 150+ amp welders.
