Hi everyone.

Been browsing the site for a while and have read alot of the posts.

I'm working on a rolling restoration of a porsche 924, well trying to get it running right now.

Theres a few areas of rust that I need to deal with. Even though the chassis and body is galvanised, one of the PO's managed to jack the car up using the floor pan

So I need to replace

part of the floor pan
inner sill
outer sill
inner wing

Do you think it would be worth buying a mig / learning to weld etc.
Or just buy replacement parts / panels and get someone round to do it.

Any ideas on price for each method. Obviously it will probably be more expensive to do it myself. And tbh I probably won't have much use for the MIG afterwards. But at least I could say I did it myself.

Hi Scott,

I can only give my prssonel opinion and I have no idea of costs, but if it is just those few bits to be done I would probably go the routs of getting somebody else in to do it. Mainly cos ( I think ) as these are structural bits of the car you don't want it to fail the MOT on them, so are probably not the best bits to start on. Plus you may have probs with door gaps by doing the sills ( maybe )!
Having said that, there is a great sense or achievment when you have done these things yourself.

I think you're right, and I probably knew the answer all along, just needed to hear it from someone else.

I'll try and keep the costs down and prepare the areas myself. Remove the underseal, strip the paint and leave some shiny metal for the welding person to cut out

Buy yourself a Mig, this is just anoner reason why you need one, as you ar bound to have more repairs to do. I bought a Mig and I now look at everything that needs fixing differently. With the Mig, so many repairs for simple rust damage to full on mower or wheel barrow repairs are now possible
Go for it, its a worthwhile investment, especially since you have considered it enough to come here and ask.

Mig is not so difficult to learn, and the merits of its workshop space are worthy of any DIY'ers garage.
