Quite new to the computer and these forums are brilliant places for like-minded souls.Have owned a USA spec Triumph Bonneville 750 and a 1959 Morris Minor since 1982.The Bonnie is in a far better condition than the Mog though.Paid £10 for the Mog and rescued it from someones garden after they abandoned it 4 years earlier.New plugs, points, petrol, battery and alot of bad language my father and I got it running.Borrowed a set of wheels, plates, tax disc and brought it home late at night, very slowly as only the handbrake worked(this was very naughty/illegal/dangerous/stupid etc and we promise never to do it again-we know someone with a trailer now!)
The best thing I`ve ever bought was a Clarke Mig 100E. In 1983 it was around £120.Got to know the local pub landlord so I could use the big CO2 gas cylinders,he charged me £10 to change the cylinder. But they seemed to last over a year of on/off use, well worth the price of the £30 gauge needed to use them.A big reel(5Kg) of 0.6mm wire and away I went on the Morris.Over the years this was our only car, kept outside all year round and used daily for work and for holidays,Wales,Scotland etc.The stuff I`ve welded to that car over the years to get through the dreaded MOT.(I got through 3 large filing cabinets from work,a lawnmower grass box,2 triangle road signs,2 bed irons, washing machine sides,80x8mm flat bar,50x50mm angle iron and 5 rolls of wire at least). After nearly 20 years the top speed dropped off and the mpg was rubbish due to car doubling its weight.Handled really well though on its radial tyres.Never used much filler just cut a plate and welded it on.All 4 wings got welded on, it was cheaper than buying new ones!A little Mig welder is a fantastic piece of kit for car repairs and so easy to use after a bit of practice.Doesn`t like underseal or thick rust but I`ve welded steel that thin you could nearly see through it(damned council and their salty roads).Time to go it`s getting late and you`re probably getting bored.
