Hello, i've been looking at the site and am impressed with the advice given and knowlege everyone has.
So I have some questions that you may be able to help me with.
I have done a short course on welding here in Canada, I can stick bits of metal together with a oxy/acc set up.
I even grabbed a couple of welding rods and hit them with a hammer and braised up a little heart and wrote my wifes name in welding rod and braised that in the middle. aaarrrrr eh.
I'm moving back to good old Blighty in July and want to do a welding course.
To be honest I want to be a motorbike mechanic and can see the benifits of welding being used with my job.
I know I would like to use welding as a hobby. Make some stuff for the house, maybe a bed or a sofa, maybe even start out with something small like a wine bottle rack or garden gates.
I am going to school in September for bike mechanics in the evening and we can afford for me to go to college during the day as the evening course starts too early for me to work full time.
So we thought I could go to welding class.
Getting in contact and asking questions with the college of north west london is a nightmare, been trying by email and phone to contact someone for two months now.
So my question is should I not bother? Maybe I could buy a Tig machine and a dvd and teach myself?
Could I get a job as a welder if I practised at home?
I don't want to deep sea dive off oil rigs just maybe get a part time job for two or three days a week in a welding shop.
Do welders earn good money?
Is a tig set up expensive to buy?
I'd like a oxy acc rig but is there any point if I have a tig set up? I could always buy a propane torch for a bit of precise heat in the Garage.
Would I be wasting my time at school when I could go out despatch riding and saving up for my own tig set up and some metal to practice on.
Your thoughts and advice is much appreciated
