Hello all,

As you can see, my name is Pete an ex mechanic. I have acquired a Mig welder, the function of is strange as I am an old fashioned gas welder by heart.

Any help would be very much appreciated, and if I am able in any way to help others then I will be only to pleased.

At mo I am reading thro the main page trying to make sense, I feel like an apprentice all over again, if you were to see my attempts at Mig welding, Pigeon droppings come to mind.

Welcome to the forums.

Which welder did you get. Some have inherent problems especially if they are used.

Post picts of the welds and the type of wire and gas you are using.

I hope I am using this forum correctly? welder is a Cebora Tri-Star Mig 1635/m and I've yet to make it sound as tho I am frying bacon, more like steam hammering!!!

Post some photos of your welds - might help diagnosis. Machine gun sound can often mean the wire speed needs to be turned down. Though lack of shielding gas and all sorts of other things would do it.

I was asked by Malcom last night to download photos of my welding attempts, you can all now have good laugh at waht you now see, notice the wire worm?.

I think something was not right.

Hi pete
were all those welds made with the same settings or are you experimenting?, the wire coiled up and the blobs are a sign of too little current, or too much wire. some of the short runs are not bad though, a sound return (earth) connection is vital when welding and can cause problems, what size wire are you using and at what current setting.

That's really weird. Did you also do the nice looking welds? - can't really fault those from the photos. For the blobs of wire Paul's diagnosis sounds spot on.

On the decent runs viewed in pics, you will see they are squeaky clean around the HAZ, other attempts you see the brown stuff around the HAZ, I would say your arc length is too long, keep it tight, and don't allow arc length to wander while you progress along the run......

Hello all,
its me again, I am not sure if I am using this forum/site correctly? I am wanting to contribute by writing in but wonder if I am writing in the correct box/place.

As a new boy, I do not want to become a nuisance, but just want to learn and exchange ideas experiences. Please help as it is becoming frustrating clicking all over the place and getting lost.

You're doing fine Pete, don't worry too much if you are unsure about which section to post in, if it's totally out of place Malcolm or one of the moderators will move it to a more appropriate section. Just by flicking through the different sections you will gain an idea of what type of posts are best in which sections.
Arc length is basically the length of wire between the contact tip and the weld pool, ideally it should be in the region of 8mm or so.
