Helicoil, Timesert or Keensert ???

Hi Guys

Just bought myself a F';ing VW camper (dont laugh)

needed a new exhaust, so took it off, only to find one off the exhaust bolts to the head had had a Heli coil in it that came out.
the original bolt size is M8 1.25, the heli coil outer dia is M10 1.25

here is the problem, the M10 thread they tapped is toilet

I will need to go up to m12 od with a m8 id

that rules helicoil out,

so whats best for a insert???

because you reduce the gasket area (ie from a m12 bolt to the outer gasket face is far less than a m8 to outer gasket face)

You'll need a heavy duty keensert type insert to go up two sizes or make your own.

Someone a few days ago (possibly Brad) mentioned a insert (Keensert ?) that had no hole pre-threaded, and that you drilled and threaded yourself back to standard size once the repair insert is installed?????

I've replaced knackered helicoils in heads with EZ-LOK with great success.

The ezlok inserts are bigger so you can drill out and reclaim the helicoils hole and still have enough meat to tap and install the ezlok. Much more sturdy solution too IMO.
The internal thread on the ezloks will be slightly recessed due to the insertion slot , but you can leave this slightly proud and machine them off if you need the threads to come up further.
