I’ve just bought a set of BSW from RGDTools, cant fault them. 5 for the price of some ‘brands’

If you’re that worried about the inserts. Buy the cheap set to get you drill bit and tap, sling the inserts and buy a packet if branded.


(Worth noting. Metric wire inserts are 1mmsq, eg. m7 tap will cut for m6 inserts. Not sure if it works for any imperial)

The approximate size is the tapping drill + pitch[6.3 +1].

Does anyone know if you can shorten a helicoil? Can it be trimmed or is it easier to buy various lengths depending on application?

You can shorten them no problem ether side cutters or a cut off disc i always buy 2 D then you can cut them to suit

I've got Armstrong Helicoil, recoil and some Chinese ebay ones, they all do the job equally well. The Chinese ones they send me 1D instead of 1.5D, I complained and they apologised immediately and sent me - 2 more packs of 1D inserts.

Am I missing something. RDG are 30 quid a set. How much are the others?

I recently got a m5-m12 course set for 19 quid delivered, and previously had m10 fine. There was a slight burr on the insertion tool but other than that work perfectly.

Do some test parts first. Do not apply constant tension when inserting, it will jump threads, release tension every half turn.
