I've never really liked helicoils as I've come across several that have failed - perhaps they were just not installed correctly. I prefer time-serts or ez-lok

I see people say this a lot, but wire thread inserts are all over commercial aircraft so if it's good enough for them...
I've certainly never had an issue, but I don't use the cheap kits.
I'd like to give the solid types a try however but they are much more expensive and harder to get.

Sometimes there is no option, I want to use them on the underside of my truck, can't exactly turn it upside down and put it on a pillar drill.

Just lift the truck up and bolt the drill to the bottom of the truck simple!

Recoil, I think that's the brand we have at work.
Most wire inserts are done by hand in my experience, they work most of the time (the tangs breaking or not breaking cause most issues)
Of course they won't work if you can't hold a hand drill steady...

Application criticality dependant theres a good bit of tolerance. I did some tests oversizing the drills and even with something like 50% less engagement than optimal the insert was still stronger than the grade 8.8 fastener.

Heli coils and V coils are fine i f you're repairing something where the bolt isn't taken in and out all the time. If it's in frequent use then Tim cert etc are better. I repaired a bit of kit for a chap who had managed to strip all the 10mm bolts in a casing. I managed to get two Helicoils in the holes by just slightly deepening the hole so he could use longer bolts. Luvvly Jubbly, or so I thought. I get a call from him raging that they had ALL stripped again and none of them would grip at all! When he brought it back the bolts did indeed fall into the holes. There were no Helicoils in there. I asked him to show me the old bolts. There on the bolts were the Helicoils. The muppet had green Loctited the bolts in and obviously the coils came out with the bolts. I refused to re do it unless he paid again as stacking Helicoils is a little tricky and he's one of those blokes who you can't tell anything to as he knows better and uses an impact wrench to the Nth degree on everything and it's never his fault.

I Araldite them in if it's a very short coil like when I repair magnesium kart rims with stripped bead retainers that have only 5 or 6 threads.

I have used 4 different sized kits from recoil shop and all have worked perfectly so they are now my first choice of supplier. Only ones I have had any problems with are a Clarke set from mahine mart.
