Height Regs

Hope this is in the right place admin please move elsewhere if not.

I have been asked to quote for an imposing arch similar to the one in Carnaby Street but not quite so wide. Does anyone know what height I needs it to be as the area it spans is over a road.

i think as long as the height is stated there is no limit, there is a 10"6' rail bridge near me

only people with the right answer is the locak office of the highways dept, afaik they have the last word

planning does not come into it as far as this is concerned, if it is on or over a road the highways dept. deals with it

they may have a say in the acceptability, suitability or design tho

If it's over a proper road make it higher than 16'6" or they'll stick a sign like this on it.

Does the height matter if you are just quoting? Sounds like you will be wasting time chasing Highways round when you might not even win the work.

As long as you include for access platforms and hoisting to get up to a similar height as that one that will cover you for pricing purposes?
If you get the job, leave it down to them to tell you how high it needs to be (Not your risk then)

I would have asked how big the arch was to be before I quoted for it....

Is it to be fixed to buildings either side, like the one in the pic?

You think I didn't ask how big they needed it? My customers aren't going to be armed with information like that before they pick the phone up. It's not fixed to buildings it's to be attached to steel posts either side that's why I needed a rough idea of the height. As the job isn't local to me I have recommended the customer does his own research regarding restrictions, he seems quite happy with that. I have quoted to give a 4.5m clearance.

Good point made by whoever mentioned the red triangle, I may as well put a sign on it saying 'I don't know what I'm doing'.

i am not sure you are actually allowed to put anything below 16'/5m... the low bridge stuff is just for existing structures afaik
