How long are folk generally getting with car batteries. My Ranger is 7 and still on the original battery.
The last battery I bought was a Varta for my old L200, always thought they were a quality battery

The battery on my X5 lasted 13 years, replaced the one on my 1 series after 11 years, but that was my fault I let it go dead by not using the car for quite a few months

Whatever my local factors is supplying and warranting is what I buy.

Yuasa in the Caterham a few years ago, something else in the Dodge last year.

This is my go to also, I'm not that bothered as long as it starts the motor.

Arguably I don't keep anything long enough for it to be an issue.

I think a huge amount of it has to do with the usage. On average my car does 45-60mins on a journey and previously I was doing more than that. It's very rare for me to replace a battery/alternator or exhaust and think that is because everything is getting a good run.

I think if you are using every day for a reasonable amount of time then batteries last pretty well but if you do short journeys especially in winter then there is real chance you don't put enough back into the battery to keep it in top condition.

I also think a lot of people never notice if their car starts a bit slower. Generally when a battery is on it's way out the signs will be there.

We have multiple vehicles that get used rarely, any of the old stuff where there is not drain on the battery will start fine months later, anything that has a clock or alarm can drain a battery pretty quickly.

Always found,the battery that was fitted by the vehicle manufacturer lasted the longest,can it be that ageing in the rest of the system causes subsequent batteries to fail earlier?

A Youtuber I watch says the same about brake discs, he says the best discs your car will ever have are the ones it came from the factory with even if you buy OEM replacements they aren't as good.

My experience has been the opposite, starts fine one day then dead the next? No deterioration in turning over ahead of the non-start. I now carry one of those jump-start packs in the boot....

Mrs Robo had that, car working fine, went to the stable then went to come home and car was dead. RAC came out and confirmed battery was kaput so jump started it to get her home.

My local auto electrical place has a very high reputation in the trade & they currently recommend Fiamm batteries, this despite being a bosch main agent!

I've fitted 2 of them & so far so good. Fiamm are the OE battery fitted to many new European cars.

Never had much trouble with Yuasa or Bosch tbh.
Have had a couple of Optima's go down, despite all their marketing buff, refuse to use them any more.

Optimas are big money but I bought a handful of used 5.5 Yellow tops from a chap a few years back. Apparently there were always changed as part of a service on a particular machine. I have an Anderson connector on a couple of them and use them as jump batteries and for my trailer winch, the thing I like is you have no issues if they fall over as there is no way for the gel to get out.

Must admit since I got my Noco GB150 I haven't used one as a boost battery.

Sure, but I bought these YTS5.5 for £50 each and you can't a AGM battery that has close to 1000CCA for that money. I have never had any other batteries give the same readings as these do on my tester and they spin stuff over better than any battery I've used but I wouldn't pay the £300 a new one costs.

I've always bought Carta for quite awhile now, seams like every time I buy a van it needs a new battery (or 2 if 2 fitted)

they've all lasted for years for me... but I've always bought the biggest / highest Ah / highest CCA ones I can

my thinking being a bit of extra power is always handy, they'll last a lot longer if they have an easy life (bigger battery isn't pushed as hard as a small one) and when they do start to get old if they lose a bit of capacity it doesn't matter because there was capacity to spare to start with


worth the extra few quid imo
