having read your OP from the link; it loos quite complecated! as i dont even know what most of the part are
What powers the air supply?

Its quite basic, I will list the gear I used and where it came from tomorrow. I chose to pressurise the oil feed rather than let it syphon the oil, that's not really necessary. I did learn a few things on the way, the supply of oil needs straining and then filtering. As @Matchless says preheating is better, its not hard to get right.

Max output, cannot remember, a lot. I regulated it by thermostat, it was on or off, but my old building was 6000 square foot on the ground floor and the same on the second floor, the second floor was mostly not on the ducted air system but the were two staircases so it got indirect heat, I used to see Chinese copies on ebay etc that looked to be a direct copy, not sure if anything is available these days, I retired 6-7 years ago ............just seen this on ebay, mine was similar, I ducted from the top, eBay item number:176305549173 I seem to remember that we used around 15 litres of waste oil a day if running flat out, I had, still have a 240v transfer pump with two filters, we used that to fill the 40 liter tank from 25 litre cans of used oil, we only sucked out 80% of can, the bottom was generally sludge and water etc. we stacked the 25 litre cans and let them settle, used them in rotation, and this is one of the copy heaters, eBay item number:166044416475 and same but a lot cheaper eBay item number:225831951120

We have endless supply of the stuff that I would like to burn it safely somehow

I'm not sure it's worth it, the cab heaters most people use coke up quickly and have other issues when burning even thinned oil. I've seen a more old fashioned oil burners which seems more up to the job.

Need to get back onto this, there is about three tons of ali waiting Very happy with the burner and getting a very nice clean flame, whats worrying me is flameout without having something in the way of auto shutoff, could very easily explode without some sort of failsafe.

No. The boilers where for steam generation it was then used for heating a large factory, using our own waste oil, but we needed more so bought some in

Water was easy to remove, if you buy it in it could be mixed with product from the factory, other chemicals, soap is a common one, the massive issue we had came from a batch used in a cotton mill as it looked fine but had loads of tiny cotton fibres in it

One problem the boffins didn't think of is Calorific value.
Its not usually an issue but in a steam boiler which is a pressure vessel the flame temperature needs to be reasonably stable, if its not you can damage the shell of the boiler, usually the front of the flame tube, so then it would require a D patch on the furnace which won't be cheap.

People used to call them a "turk" burner. I don't know why.

They are very very simple to build, but no automated start up, and difficult to balance.

The feed will just be self leveling. Ie connected to another oil reservoir that's the same height. Like the aga / rayburn BM meetering valves.


I would not think the unit will run reliably for long. And you would need to put it inside a log burner type enclosure, so it's not stand alone.


The Americans seem to do quite well with their drip feed brake rotor (disc) units.

Waste oil heaters aren't banned as far as I know but if you are burning waste oil as opposed to HVO, rape etc you do need a license which costs £3218 for the initial application to an ongoing £1384 per year afterwards.

If you have a large workshop it can still work out considerably cheaper than the usual types of heating, especially if you get the waste oil for free. I know of several garages, some with attached shops that still use waste oil burners due to the savings they make over a year.
As far as I'm aware the permit isn't site specific so can be applied to multiple sites.

The irony of it is that licensing was introduced for environmental reasons due to badly maintained burners but the waste oil when collected by third parties is generally burnt anyway to produce power with extra emissions from transporting it to it destination. Better to have just introduced legislation for testing at a reasonable price.

So you think if the fuel supply tank is the same height as the burner then it should not over drip feed and flood the burner?

Anyone would think you are an expert @gaz1 The truth though, is you're not allways right. The second one is identical to a pressure jet to all intents and purposes, allbeit with a Delavan style syphon nozzle. There is mo reason this won't burn as clean as your domestic boiler.
Amongst my many half started projects is something identical to this, one day I will finish it, and will quite happily use it to heat my workshop.

It doesn't get much more simple and effective than a thermobile unit. You can fix up an old one and keep it going forever, if you want, probably the only thing you definitely need is a burner pan in good nick, everything else you can cobble together yourself.
They need a good length of flue to work well, minimum 4.5m ideally, I had ours on 3m but it didn't have enough draw to burn clean.

Once started, they burn very cleanly, but it'll put a load of black smoke out for 10 to 15 mins first.

they may indeed be a simple bit of kit compared to modern electronic stuff build today. But the problem with buying one off of the shelf for me is its too big! to hot! to expencive! and wont go into all the small rooms I want the heat to go into like if it had a back boiler on it for central heating or something like that

An example is; I am running an electric fire hear in a 4x5M room at the moment and probably using about 200w/ Hr right now

It looks like they use some kind of mixing valve to mix the oil and the air together
That should be the brain or heart of the system and most difficulat to build!
If only he explained him self in the video and explained the part he is using then I may be onto a start with this as I am thinking along the line of an old carburetor

Still in the video it dose not look right as oil is leaking from it

I think your basic problem is that there is a spectrum that runs between spending a lot of money and putting in minimal effort (eg kroll etc) or, at the other end, putting in a load of effort and not spending much money.

If you decide where on that spectrum you are then there may be a solution.

If, however, you are looking for a cheap / no effort option, I just don't think it exists.
