Heating Nozzle

So here's the problem. I currently use a cutting torch to heat reinforcing rod in small areas in order to bend it. I've always thought I should be using some sort of heating nozzle rather than a cutting one but never got round to doing anything about it. Now I'm wondering what the gas consumption is going to be like. Am I going to use more with a heating nozzle than with a cutting one or less? I really have no idea. Does anyone else?

If you use a big pepper pot type nozzle, youl be using considerably more, but shouldnt need to use it for so long. Swings and roundabouts really.
What size bars are you bending? Perhaps a hand bender could save you a lot of gas?

Hmm. I had a feeling that was the case. I suspect that the time saving would not outweigh the extra gas cost unless you were heating something fairly manly.

I'm bending 8mm bar (which is a b*gger) to get hold of. Unfortunately though I bend it around several other bars so the hand bender's not really an option. The thing that really gets me is having to pay 12 odd quid to pick up a bottle of Oxygen that costs me £6 to get refilled!

To be honest, a big heating nozzle would be a bit overkill for 8mm bar anyway.

Yeah. I reckon so too. Plus it's quite nice to be able to use the cutter as and when I need it. It's be a bit of a pain to change back and forth. Just thought I might be missing out on something!

You could try out a larger cutting nozzle, what size are you on at the moment?

You can get a screw in heating nozzle with replacement "pepper-pot" inserts for use with cutting torches... a PHNM... only work with Oxy/Propane though & not Oxy/Acetylene.
