Heating fail. Help?

You need ground for a ground source pump! most new build houses have very small gardens, maybe communal systems like the Russian steam piped systems? I could do it but toooooo much disruption and cost, maybe 20 years ago I would have.

Trust me, we do it every day using boreholes, much less ground needed

Air source heat pumps can be made to work but they just need a bit more care in the design. For commercial buildings and in particular refurbs where there is no chance of ground source being used then generally use multiple units set such that they cannot all go into defrost mode simultaneously. Linked to underfloor heating they can be a very good 'green' solution. As with most things in life the simpler solutions work best. normally all goes wrong when over designed and complicated.
retrofitting to individual domestic properties that have had conventional boiler systems rarely is a good solution.

Again I have to disagree, however my day job is installing GSHP in social housing and commercial buildings, so I would disagree, wouldn't I

@Kayos I'd be interested to know the costs.
I started to look at them for a new build (in a tight sight with london clay subsurface) but the cost of the borehole sent me running towards air source heat pump

New build can offset the cost of boreholes as you save on the gas connection costs, however id be working it on £50/m for a borehole including the loop, without info on the property I cant even guess at borehole requirements but 200m is a nice round starting point.......

Your right we are not going with gas, but air source is likely to be the final choice
Hoping to get quite a long way towards passivehaus ..but not going to go through all the way to certification level as it's a not going to add value

Just build a grade (or category) 6 eco house, not quite Passivehause but pretty good

you can't really stop an air source heat pump icing up, once the coil is below 0'C it's enviable

I like the above idea of multiple pumps, so one runs while the other defrosts

defrosting is easy when it's above 0'C outside, you just turn off the compressor and let the fan run blowing warmer air over the coil to defrost it, things get less efficient when it's below 0'C outside and you need to run heaters and/or reverse the system
