Heating Coming On Randomly

My boiler is in an unheated single skin "utility room" (aka converted shed pretty much)...... and till now I've never once thought about frost stats & freezing etc for my (now about 27-year-old) Worcester Danesmoor (conventional) boiler . (Dumb old tech Honeywell Timer unit / controller & a room stat & tank stat).

One year I came home during a thaw after being away with the temps down to -15 degrees the day before (heating off) ... to find a pipe burst in the utility room..... but the boiler was unaffected.

Was I just really lucky, or is my old school boiler just different?

generaly a single pipe is more at risk no protection no covers they are lightly to fail before a boiler but thatr could be differant if the boiler is on a cold wall the rest of the pipe work not also remeber if a pipe is frozen water can go any where the boiler cant send the hot water its producing so boils its self (not lightly to happen on newer boilers as they have protection for that thing but that could fail ?

Even boiler frost protection is no guarantee, some boilers go overboard with inbuilt frost protection, some not so, I've had pipes freeze upto and into boilers causing mild frost damage whilst the boiler was on but not set to run heating, it's always way less damage than the boiler just being off, folk are now paranoid and will happily turn a boiler off and go back n holiday for three weeks......
