Yes thats the way to do it i have never had a problem with a H&S person whose background is in the field they are working in.I must be a lucky person, my company has got 2 employees as H&S staff. but both have experience in the task we do.
Plus we encourage new ideas to make our life safer.
Classic example was A frame ladders to go up 4m to change detectors and E lights. Used to be a 1 man job. Now after 1 incident it is 2. Makes life easier by far.
Its always the person whose only training is around H&S, without the in depth knowledge and background in a subject its pointless.
