Seriously though, any noticeable impact on the eye's, soreness? itchy?, I would have thought to cause headaches then the eyes would also be affected to some extent.

don't rule out fumes either. Never affected me but a guy on the course i did had terrible headaches until he started wearing a respirator mask

What material are you welding, it's not been galvanised or has a coating by any chance.

flux fumes are lethal, i get a real bad cough welding flux core mig without a mask on. Arc doesn't seem too bad but still wear a mask. Ideally i need an air fed unit being asthmatic but cant afford one

I love the smell of arc!
mig though, the fumes, the pulsing light, and the spatter all combine to a throbbing headache.

, but the OP hasn't been seen since Nov 2019 so he's either dead or the suggestions cured his headache.Hi , did you experienced only headaches or also problems with eyes ?
To be honest , autodarkening helmets are made for tig , but everyone uses them for mig because they are confortable .
If you are only tack welding , it's ok ( ish ) , but for welding you should wear dark glass helmets , that's it . Nothing can be faster than light so you eyes get small flashes after flashes , even if you are using expensive helmets like Optrel or 3M or Esab . 11 or 12 shade is recommended , 13 for high amperes welding .
Fumes :
Fumes are at 90% of times the main cause of headaches , go with a filter mask or a papr system ( from my direct experience , 3M is the only one that really works )
Noise :
Protect always your hears , because welding produces high frequency noises , expecially in pulsed or double pulsed mode . Always wear hear plugs
Heat :
If you are welding for hours , your face/head gets a lot of heat ( imagine to stay on the beach under the sun for hours without protection ) - that's not a joke , we do always protect our face and neck with a high protection sun cream , and remember to stay continuously hydratated , expecially in summer .
