Sorry for resurrecting this thread but I'm shopping around for a decent head torch. A Christmas offer leaflet for a local hardware store was pushed in my direction by my Mum, hinting for me to pick my xmas prezzie from it! 
There are a few head torches on it & 2 of them caught my eye.

This one is rechargeable, 3 light settings but one of them is flashing which I never use & it annoys me when you have to cycle through it. But the thing I really like is the setting that allows you to switch the torch on & off by waving your hand in front of it. How many times have you had to remove gloves or clean a dirty finger to operate the torch switch? I tried it out in the shop & it works well & goes straight onto the brightest setting, no cycling through the others!
I have a lighthouse worklamp & it has stood some abuse, knocks & falls but still works so the head torch should be ok. The only downside is that you cannot fit standard batteries when the internal battery goes flat.

This is my other choice, an Led Lenser. Also rechargeable but you can also fit aaa batteries. Well featured with adjustable brightness & focus, no stupid flashing setting & if it had the hand wave on/off it would be the automatic choice. Haven't had a chance to try it out as they are out of stock til next week. By reputation a well made torch but I have read reports of fragility, what are your experiences?

Use it everyday, battery is OK, but not for continuous use... so I bought another; 1 on charge, 1 on my head.
If I was to buy again, I think I’d be looking on aliexpress, as there are far too many to choose from, and cheap as chips.

This is a cracking deal for a proper head torch, none of that petzl/Lenser tat. This thing has serious power and supplies a great tint, not the overly blue LEDs that you get with cheaper makes.

I’d use the headband supplied and pictured but I guess duct tape would work, use gorilla tape for the full eyebrow removing experience

i had a REAL bad experience with the flashing mode on a cree headtorch............ driving SAR landrover on a shout, came round a bend in the lanes and there was a dog walker about 150 yards up the road, as i came round he looked up to see what was coming, and then obviously got stuck watching me approach. the immediate effect was to completely dazzle and disorientate me and nearly put me through a hedge, the secondary effect was several carefully chosen words out of the window as i got my wits back and (slowly) passed him!!! horrible experience and just a thought for anyone buying a similarly bright torch for that sort of use... it might actually make it more likely that you get ran over

One of the h7r.. I have has a faulty mini usb port, failing to charge. Thankfully a mate can repair it.
Only grumble I have is battery life.

Once I got a look at the Led Lenser it was no competition, it just oozes quality. I bought it on the spot, didn't want to chance them selling out again.
Then when I got it home & tried it out in proper darkness - omg! Going from a standard head torch to that is like going from sidelights to main beam in your car - it is just so bright! But the adjustable brightness is great for close up work without blinding yourself. I was like a child with a new toy, finding excuses to use it all the time.
I thought the rear mounted battery back & wiring would be cumbersome but it is very comfortable. In fact I forgot I was wearing it, only realising when I went into the house & couldn't remove my hat!
This is it alongside my 15 year old petzl. It has survived many knocks falls & countless sets of batteries.
The plastic in it has gotten hard & brittle, even superglue can't hold it together but it still works, though the switch is dodgy. It had served me well & certainly owes me nothing! But the light output from the petzl at its best was never as good as the Led Lenser, technology has come a long way in 15 years!
These are some of the cheap head torches I've bought/been given to replace the petzl but none came close - at least now I can stop looking!

This will eat a set of aaa rechargeables in 2 hours on full power, 40h at minimum. But this one has a nifty mini usb slot so that you can charge the batteries in the torch!
Just have to remember to charge it every night!

Oh yes, plenty batteries here but nonetheless they do go through them. I had thought of putting either a bigger pack or a charging socket on it but really I mainly use it for stuff where I can manage the batteries. I keep a go to bag in the car with a Petzl and a plastic bag with separate dry batteries . For my late night/early morning dog poo collection I keep yet another Petzl in my coat pocket... the older Petzls are bright enough for gp duties and the batteries last long enough not to worry about them.
