HDMI to scart?

sorry dumb question. Having just received a now tv box etc I see that our tv (old CRT type) only has scart inputs. The now tv website says the box can only be connected via the hdmi slot but does anyone know if the hdmi to scart connectors will work, before I splash out on one?

I'm no expert either but I suspect you may have to get one that strips the HDCP other wise it may not handshake correctly.

Son in law had same problem with a new Samsung TV having only HDMI and one of his things only having scart, he bought an adapter from ebay, was around the £12 mark and all ok

I'd be surprised if it needed to strip the HDCP as all the device will do is pretend to be a display when it handshakes with the NowTv box and then convert the signal to analogue.

If your Tv supports RGB scart then get a HDMI-to-scart device that outputs RGB rather than one that just outputs composite/CVBS the picture quality will be better that way.

From best to worst the analogue video goes like this ... RGB, S-Video, composite or CVBS (2 names for the same thing)

Thanks for all the replies. That last one lost me but you'd expect that from someone whose tv weighs as much as a Colchester.

It sounds like it hopefully will work. I'll go visit one of the electrical shops. If no joy it might be time for a fandangled flat screen jobbie.

Oops I didn't look that closely! should have learned by now, read everything on ebay twice! oddly enough exactly the same looking box coverts the way required as well.

Buy a new tv the difference in quality is worth it, there are always reasonable second hand ones on facebook groups if you don't want new.

We resisted the new TV option for ages thinking there was nothing wrong with the old CRT with freeview built in then eventually thought sod it and bought a smart tv with built in satellite and now think why did we hang on to the old one for so long ? The old one went on freecycle and was snapped up by a couple just setting up. You can pick up a HD ready 32" for £120 at Tesco or something similar and your box will make it smart.

Yep I ordered one of those boxes. Will see how it goes next week.

I know we will "need" a new tv at some point but this one is still working fine ..... hopefully I can cobble together the connections for a while.

Got the details, although I got the price wrong, he had mentioned the £12 one's (which I thought it was) but had some doubt that they actually converted the signal so bought this one.

They work, I fed the output from various hdmi kit into a hdml switch, then run that through a separate hdmi->scart converter to convert to composite that feeds into a input in a composite switch box and then out to another scart only device. It lets me have 15 devices on that one display. I was debugging a connection on it the other day and fed a signal from a xbox one console right into the converter to test, and that worked. And if something as locked down as a xbox one will work, I believe that indicates its got a valid hdmi identity to negotiate a connection.
That box was about 15 quid, because it was only a temporary solution while waiting for a card for the display device.

Well it all arrived and seems to work ok. The now tv internet seems pretty quick but the interface with the tv box a little slower, but it suits what we need. The only real issue is the size of the words on the menus - I guess it's designed for something bigger than our tv.

you do realise that what your on about will also work with pc,s hdmi output will also work as thats what i was wanting to connect up to the tv when i tried it a few years back at the time was cheaper to buy another graphics card and connect pc to the analogue tv
