Having a go at citric acid derusting

Some toilet descalers, coca cola... I use a paste furniture wax on mill table, lathe boring table etc. after a bit of heat gun, it's carried them over a couple of winters rust-free. If there's any chance at all you might want to paint it any century in the future make sure there aren't any silicones in the wax - you'll never get rid of it and it'll fisheye the paint like Hammerite - don't ask.

no chance of painting at least by me my vice i derusted with a wire wheel got got waxed and again every few months

with tools dont mind the oil but this is possably used as a door stop so thinking wax

is there anything i might have at home that contains this ?

Spray it with some furniture polish and a light rub over with a cloth.

like the idea but ive got a clumsy kid here hot water and child i dont want to mix warm water not a problem

need to remove the brown tinge on it first rubed it a few times but when it trys it stays brown



note to self i put my new to me mac trigger plyers in there overnight they come out clean from rust but took all the nice chroming of them yes better to have them more useable but bit miffed they took the rest off

someone (@MattF ?) recommended a wipe over with boiled linseed oil: it dries, unlike (say) motor oil and doesnt affect (oil based) paints.

and it looks good-preserves the patina.

I've never done anything decorative: I usually pull from the citric, quick whizz over with the angry grinder wire wheel, and then primer. Or a wipe over with a (motor) oily rag

Been using BLO on tools for a while, leaves a nice patina and seems to protect well.
