Welding a '66 Mustang ...

On my nightschool welding course everyone is playing about with 3mm and 6mm sheet but specifically on the course to do the bodywork on my car, I need to lern to do the thin sheet stuff.
No the welder we have there is a HUGE orange 'KEMPRIT' (?) 3200 thing which would build bridges I'm sure and you have to have it on virtually the lowest setting to be able to weld the thin stuff I found (through trial and error) last week.
Tacking at two inch intervals and then trying to run a lap joint weld took some doing (for me) without doing too much damage but then the lecturer guy said to go in very short spurts, on-off, on-off, and this was the result - looks almost like a TIG weld ...
What do you lot think? Acceptable, or should I practice the longer run stuff? Maybe an inch or two inches at a time, before leaving it to cool.
Virtually no distortion with the on-off method either.
I am using 0.8 wire though and he said it'll be easier on the thin stuff with the 0.6 one.
If I could just get the technique right to get it straight I'd maybe be okay ...
The left hand phot shows a nice weld in the middle which the guy did for me ...
And the right hand photo shows my attaempts to copy him
