so this is my MIG..

nothing special at all however i'd like to make some improvements i.e
new liner and new gas line. so i
whipped the rusty screws out with an angle
grinder to have a peak at her insides.

cant believe how tiny the wire motor is ...

can anyone see anything worth playing with... ive heard
of doing 'mods' to these?

also where can i get this bit?Came out of the torch handle,
inside the swan neck, i took it out as it kept catching the
wire causing it to bunch at the motor end.

basically should i throw any money at this machine, it welds,
not amazingly (mainly due to the owner more than anything)
but it serves the purpose for me or should i be looking at getting
a second hand better machine?

the part in your hand is the swan neck liner, you should be able to clean it unless its damaged.
replacing the liner often makes welding easier, but unless the gas line is leaking there is no advanage to replacing it

oh great! thanks ... i shall look for a new one as this one seemed to make the wire bunch, since taking it out ive not had any .. perculiar

I found my old SIP worked better without a swan neck liner so I never replaced it. Mine was an Autoplus 130, long gone now but in the years I had it it worked fine for what I was doing at the time.

I reckon you should treat yourself to a shiny BOC 190c mig, there's a nice one for sale on here I believe (cough cough) lol

Looking at the transformer, the laminations are welded together, which doesn't seem like a good idea, since the whole purpose of laminations is to minimise eddy current losses, by breaking the current paths that would exist in a solid core.

if we where face to face, you'd see a ginger goatie with a blank expression, im sorry but i dont know what you mean however i did think it odd that that big lump was welded so crudely... perhaps it broke and a previous owner bodged it back together?

Many big name transformers are welded together. My Miller and Airco are as well as the big Lincoln Electric one also. I think my Clarke had it to.

The laminations prevent a loop through the transformer core. Even welded together, it still is not a continuous loop.

Weldequip could probably sort you a swan neck liner. Will work smoother with one.

All the ones I have seen (including some VERY big ones) have been welded in that manor its how there made

just buy a new ptfe liner and not only will it feed the wire smoother but is cheap too
