Hi all,
Has anyone used the uk Metal supermarkets? there is one not far from me in Livingstone and i just wondered if anyone had anything good/bad to say about them?
Yep, used the one in Trafford Prk in Manchester. Not bad, can't really comment on prices as I've only really used them. They'll sell you any size bit and cut stuff to size for you.
I use the one in Govan, They will cut what you want....I found them a little on the expensive side, but I don't know of anywhere else to get what I need.....You are just up the road from me so If you find a good local source of materials, let me know !
If you're looking for m/s bar, section or sheet (down to 2mm, I think), Brown and Glegg in Sighthill will do you trade prices for full lengths (6-7m, take your hacksaw!). Or there's Blakes on Pitt street in Leith who will do shorter lengths (for the same prices as B&G's full lengths...)
That's all mill scaled hot rolled stuff. I have no idea where to get thin walled box or tube or cold rolled sheet. Not a scooby. Let me know anyone??
I have found them good for buying a short piece of section for a specific job, where to buy a standard 6.3m length would end up with most of it sitting on the rack doing nothing - just been today and bought a 300mm length of 220mm diameter round bar for a machining job. A lot of the smaller section stuff you are better off buying in full lengths from a stockholder and taking the hacksaw along for the ride. I lazily went to metal supermarkets for 3x 500mm lengths of 50mm round bar a while back, and by the time they had charged me for the steel and for cutting it cost me twice the price of a full length. Just compare prices before going mad in there!
Hi Guys,
Im looking for mainly mild steel sheet and 1x1" box and 19mm dia tube.
Ive not had a chance to visit Blakes yet but i will as ive got a stained glass job to do in Pitt st round the corner,id rather but in full length and chop it up to save pennies.
I shall investigate forthwith!
Joe
p.s. anyone guess what i thinking of building yet?
Just got an email back from Lothian steel and all that lot came to £77.00 inc vat which i think is pretty good considering im joe public so to speak.
Ive just remembered we've got a local blacksmith/engineer that ive bought stuff off before and he's normally easy on the pricing, might pay him a visit.
