Has anyone made a swamp chiller?

Every year I think of fitting air-con, then the few really hot days pass by and air-con goes back to bottom of the list.
We close all the curtains, open the windows and put up with it for a couple of days.
It won't last long.

Do the same as I intend - make a note to search for them in Winter

Funnily enough I was debating burying a blue barrel in the ground. Then pumping the water, in a closed loop, from a coil in the bottom of the barrel to a copper coil strapped to the front of a fan.

In effect a ground source heat pump. Condensate goes back to the barrel.

Something I've seen in Australian builds, they run some 10" ducting a metre or so underground and blow air through it, from the house, then back into the house. It comes up nice and cool.

My new workshop will have air con, powered by the solar panels on the roof of the workshop, win-win. (I hope).

@Barking Mat, whenever I tell people that I lived in Salt Lake, they often ask if I'm a Mormon (LDS). Nope. I'm not LDS.

And actually, LDS folks do use power tools and are very techno-savvy.

Perhaps you're thinking of the Amish. I'm not Amish either, but it's my understanding that even the Amish sometimes use power tools that don't require a grid/mains connection as a power source. I watched a group of Amish carpenters help some people put up a new barn earlier this year. It was amazing to watch them work. Highly organized and very efficient. The barn went up quickly, and it looks really solid!

As you might have deduced from some of my posts, I love power tools, and Mrs. Blue Chips can vouch for that!

Repairing loose 220-year-old plaster in an attic is hot work, even in cooler weather. It's about 91F (33C) here today, which is hotter than usual, but at least it's not overly humid (38%).

I don't have a swamp cooler, but if I did, it would probably work fairly well today with the low humidity. However, I do have a window-mount air conditioner (compressor type), which I installed in one of the attic windows, making it much more pleasant to work.
