Hardox 450 Info

Hi, i was wondering if someone can give me some additional experience info regarding Hardox. I am looking to use this material on a padlock cover and need to protect it from the outdoor elements. From doing a bit of research I know it can not be galvanised and just turns brittle. out of curiosity, can this material be galvanised?

Hardox and it's mates, Weldox etc are designed to resist wear (Hence use on digger buckets etc), whilst it's tougher it doesnt offer a great deal more security wise over normal S355 steel.

Use thick stainless; mean the light fingered ones can't use burning gear on it.

Exactly that. Up against the likes of gas/cordless grinders, it is no better than anything else.

why does thick stainless stop burning gear? I thought oxy acet was capable of quite thick cuts? Or have I been mis informed

why is that then? I've never tried to cut anything but mild with it and use it for heating.

Oxy-fuel relies on the steel oxidising when you apply the "cutting" oxygen.

Stainless doesn't oxidise in the correct manner, you can melt it away messily very very slowly but you can't flame cut it.

The chromium and nickel in stainless are more stable at high temperature than 'plain' steel and protect the steel from making contact with the oxygen from the torch....something like that anyway.

I've tried it - it won't cut.

The chromium forms an oxide layer upon contact with the air that protects it, just like alu does.

Just brush some oil on padlock cover that'll keep it from rusting.

I never realised either that oxy wouldn't cut stainless.
Sadly for security all they use these days are rechargeable angle grinders and they will cut through most things.

Not a mixture of metals - use stainless outer, plywood center and ceramic tile inner laminate. This is how safes and vaults are made to resist attack

I thought there was a layer of concrete (Or similar stuff) in there somewhere. What material will stop a thermal lance?

Sorry, I don't know about static stuff, my experience only covers cash in transit safes. The specification normally requires the vehicle converter/manufacturer meet a minimum time of ten minutes for safe entry through any means. By which time armed police would be on scene anyway

I guess if you're carrying 18million quid on 6 pallets in used twenties and your vehicle is connected to the emergency services through multiple data networks you get significantly better service than the rest of us

Unless the police think there might be a risk of confronting anybody dangerous by turning up, in which case they'll be most noticed by their absence.

I read somewhere that once upon a time, safe-makers used to put a bit of fancy alloy steel around the lock but with little chips of tungsten carbide in it designed to chip drills if someone wanted the to get the treasure inside.
