Hardfacing..talk to me

Recently replaced the pick up hitch on a JD2140, the previous owner had welded bolts here there and everywhere, but more to the point the claws are worn and the plate which they fold up to has been welded and looks very worn too.

There are a couple of other repairs that want doing, but I’d like to have a go at hardfacing the contact areas and building them back up so it can be put on the shelf for 15 years.

I assume I’m going to need to put a fair bit of heat in to the part before welding, but is there anything else I need to be aware of?

I have MIG, TIG and MMA available..

A picture of the mating surfaces would be helpful, hard facing rods maybe an option.

Depending on how worn the mating surfaces are, I'm shore someone who has used them before will be along soon.

had to build up some digging bucket teeth for some weird machine....at the time new'un's not available.........
build the item up with normal stick weld rods to shape then hard face.......hard face rods are mad expensive but do a good job........
never, ever used extra heat prior to hard facing......right or wrong I dont know.......!!!!!!!!!! never had a problem..........BUT only small items tho..........

I’ll get pictures of the replacement units faces once she’s back in the yard when I am too..

“Hooks” clamp under/over/around the plate which has been welded previously. Seems there’s a lot of play between the surfaces, the hooks should be more rounded and the plate a little thicker.

It’s had a hard life..

My opinion is it could be done but you might be better either having 2 new hooks made or looking for second hand ones the reason being they both need to be the same profile other wise you will have difficulty incatching them but additionally if wrongly shaped they may uncatch with a loaded trailer on as for a hard life that is just general wear over the years but I would check the actual saddle for wear if that is worn it increases the wear on the hooks as it moves from side to side

I personally would want new hooks there is a serious amount of strain on them at times ive had the toes of the hook snap of before
I wouldn't want that to happen on the road or while your foot is inder the trailers drawbar
Also some of the hooks are cast alloys so don't know how they will weld and if they are just hardened if the heat will affect them

As above, I’ve replaced the pick up hitch with a good example from a unit that literally had a bucket on the front from the day it was purchased, and did little or no towing.

It was purely another thing that had been added to my list while lambing gets under way.. I’ll chuck it in the scrap bin tomorrow
