hi, 1st post, but lurked for a while, hopefully this is of use to some as "repayment" for the excellent info i've had since joining.
we have very hard water and use a salt based water softener for whole house, excluding drinking water - works great for shower / washing machine etc.
We used to have a simple cartidge under the sink for drinking water, but it didn't stop the limescale in kettle and coffee machine. So last year we replaced the simple undersink cartridge (cost for that cartridge was around £25 per 4 months) with a small (under sink) reverse osmosis (RO) system and the limescale doesn't appear in the kettle anymore, for us a great success.
the new system has running costs, 1 cartridge needs replacing every 6 months ~ £30, a second cartidge needs replacement every 12 months, another £30 and then the main RO cartridge needs changing every 2 years at arount £80.
Other benefit is a massive reduction in other stuff in the water. I also use the water it produces for car washer bottle - no more white streaks on the windscreen.
There are many RO systems available to suit different volume needs - i'd recommend investigating an RO system if drinking water quality is important to you.
