Hard to get help!

Evening all,
Although my business is only making me a low income it's getting busier slowly but surely, I'm at the stage where dealing with customers enquiries, organising work, ordering parts etc, and doing pick ups & delivery's all with breakdowns in between it's gettin close to impossible. I try to do the repairs very early in morning & in the evenings because the day is easily used up with the other tasks. I thought a little help a couple days of my seven day week would be a help just to do the washing, greasing, painting etc. I have a couple mates out of work so thought would be good for one of them, but it seems no one wants to work iv plenty people who are interested but they want a paid day for little work. I'm looking for someone to be keen and work their 8 hrs. Seems hard to find???? can't understand why? It's one for the new year now but I was needing a rant!!!

they dont want to work because they will loose there benifits . they would work cash in hand when they feel like it and on there terms not yours thats the way it goes .

i agree with you there. The one guy who is a very good friend, doesn't claim benefits ( don't understand his reasons) no longer seems interested in work. He used to work with me nearly everyday a couple years back when i was employed and doing my own work at night & weekends, he was keen and knew i was going to take him on one day. I taught him a bit & assumed i could eventually have a very good engineer.
Theres not really much i can do just seems a waste.

In my last job I used to interview candidates for several roles, they always had a pre interview chat a week before and given a booklet, they were told a section of the interview would be to prove they had studied the booklet as proof they were keen.

It was obvious some of them had never opened it, never mind studied it and this was for a vacancy with a high salary, great pension and nearly 6 weeks leave a year, there is a lot of timewasters out there who expect a living given to them without having to work for it.

It can be difficult finding part time labour. One of my subbies is a total control freak who is not happy unless the job is not done to 110%, but has a habit of discussing alternative ways of doing the work with the client. Another is just the opposite, every thing he does has to be double checked and any excuse to not finish a job will be taken. Recently he told me that he would not invoice me for travel for one particular job, I did point out that I had collected him from his house every day that week.
Some times I work out the time spent doing the quotes, site survey, drawings, ordering stock etc. and realise that the subbies are earning more a day than I am and think why bother, but I still do it, more the fool me ?

I really dont understand this mentality, ive recently lost one of my jobs, being self employed, with no notice. Ive still got the one on our family farm, but id be chomping at the bit if a role came up in an engineering type place, even if it was part time, as tbh that would suit me better, the job i lost was mostly 2 days a week at an agri engineering workshop, so fixing tractors, but mostly quadbikes and the odd welding/gate type job. But i was always happy to do extra days or more hours if a job needed finishing, i think its just too easy to sit and earn (i use the word as loosely as possible!) benefits now a days!

I've had the exact same problem! I started having trouble being everywhere doing everything myself so started looking for part time help. I've had some ridiculous things happen, I've been insulted, let down and had my equipment tampered with when I didnt want to pay a guy £18 per hour for a bit of mig welding when we had already agreed a price!! I then hired someone completely unskilled hoping I could teach him and that was a disaster too!! I was starting to give up hope.

I've finally found a real good lad now and hopefully things will work out but I found it exhausting trying to try find help when I couldn't do the jobs I already had!!

It's a sad state of affairs, in my mind there should never be a situation where being on benefits is more beneficial than actually working.

It's sad the amount of kids who think the world owes them a living so they go to Uni and get some completely useless degree.

I grew up on a farm, my dad was a stockman so we didn't own the place. Me and my brother were expected to pull our weight from an early age and that has put us in good stead through our lives.

Through hard work I'm in a position where I've been able to move back to a rural area and have some land.

My 9 year son saved his money because e wanted a cordless drill, saved up £80. Already has a great work ethic.He has desire to succeed, can already drive an old Landrover round the field on his own and do hill starts.He's already saved another £65 for something else.

My kids don't get any money unless they earn it, I have no issues giving one more than the other if I think he worked harder

We have a babysitter who is 16 and has 3 jobs as well as going to college! It certainly seems different in these rural areas.

I work with blokes who need to stop for a coffee every couple of hours, I would rather not bother just get the job done.

It seems a proper working day is long forgotten these days, poeple phoning in sick because they have a cold.

It does seem that there people are very short sighted, if you took someone on and they worked really hard and did well you would end up paying to keep them because they earned you money.

Listen me I sound like a grumpy old man but I'm only in my early 40s

well said modern youth have no idea brought up too mollycoddled
nowadays to expect all for for not doing a lot none of them seem to want dirty jobs either so no wonder the uk is going down the tubes

Keep on grumping, my last employer decided I was not worth the ten years I had given them and took 8 months to get round to TALKING about me going back after they caused the straw that sent me into a year of depression and therapy. Took 'redundancy' and the place is a ****tip now, and then, according to the friends I still have there.

I am doing about 20 hours a week cash in hand, at the moment to make sure I can manage, in the corner shop. Delays in putting me on the books may prevent me getting the Working Tax Credits I am due.

Two years ago I said I was ready to go back to my 20k+ job, they made so many excuses it made me wonder why bother. No, the lawyers were no help. My sick days were negligible, but who gave a to$$. ?How many holidays had I forgone to cover other peoples days off or cock-ups by 'managers'

People who WANT to work will come, be patient.

I was told by a member on another forum how great it would be to have someone of my experience working with them, in Vancouver. Now they cannot even be bothered to reply to my CV.

Know how you feel we have sacked 5 at our works in last 6 months there must be some willing to work but not easy to find them

Well I had a chat with my mate today. I told him in plain English to pick himself up and sort out his head, made it clear if he was to stick in the job would go full time then he'd get full training and after a few years we could build a case for his accredited qualifications. It was no use, must be too much effort. Basically he looking for easy money and out the door at 5 every night. No good to me if the work needs finished I'm there until its finished. So onwards and upwards, see what new faces the new year brings!!!!

So what is the problem?
Why don't people want to work?
I want to work, I don't mind a bit of overtime, if you want me to work till 9pm I hope you don't mind me ordering a pizza to be delivered to the workshop because I get hungry and a quick ten minutes to eat it.
If you want me to lift heavy dirty stuff all day I will, I even bring my own gloves to work.

Chee if I lived in Fife I would have that job off your hands. But it would be a bloody long commute for me at the moment.
A job with training, leading to qualifications. Sounds fantastic.

Why not advertise on here somehow?
I'm sure there must be someone near to you?

Hi Hugh, I'm going to advertise for someone around march, although I'm kept going all year summer gets a bit manic. I know there is people out there who will want the job. Iv got a young guy working with me just now, he's keen enough, but he has already told me he wants to repair cars for a living. That's fair enough at least he's helping me at the moment.
Iv got big plans for 2013 so with any luck I'll be expanding a bit more, and I'll have a part time job for my old dad aswell since he's going to retire at 55 which is also 2013. Iv got plenty plans & dreams but we all know these often fall through!!

I would love to find an employer that wants to take me on and teach me but pay more than 50p an hour even th then i was under 16. Trying to find an apprenticeship in my neck of the woods is like a needle in a hay stack!

I tried to get a job when I left my last one in 2009.
filled in god knows how many cv's and never got a reply from any of them.
I'm not time served but been welding and fabrication for well over 35 years.
so I thought ****** it I'll go it alone and doing fine.
not making a fortune but at least it keep my head above water.
so it seem different area has different requirements.
now if I could tig weld I could get a job tomorrow.
but I've only got 4 years to retirement. so maybe to old for training
