When was any taxation ever 'fair'? You could equally ask why you need to pay VED for every car you own when you can only drive one at a time.

I shouldn't think so, it hasn't been called the Road Fund for decades now. Calling it that would imply the money was spent on the roads. Now it's Vehicle Excise Duty; i.e. a fine for daring to own a motor vehicle, and the money goes... well, I think we all know where it doesn't go.

YOU can only drive one at a time but what about someone else driving one of your cars while you drive another?

i got my norton back on the road last year i never sorned it about 6 years ago its free road tax but still must be done . the law has recently being changed if i dont sorn it if its off the road il be fined and could allso loose the original registration number 
the bikes a 1963 with old black number plate it would look great with a yellow one and 7 figures on it not

amazing how many vehicles were lifted or clamped with stickers on, must have been about 30+ vehicles they were still removing them next day.
tried taking my disco of drive luckily our lass was in and showed them receipt for it stating id bought it day before, she had done it online about 10mins before so wasnt showing up on system yet.
said they would leave it 24hrs.

^ SORN seems completely pointless to me. Just a cost in admin and a load of hassle, a reason to criminalise people for something that's just a logical condition - as in it's either taxed or it's not. So who needs a piece of paper to say "not taxed".
In Switzerland (prob other places too), you licence the reg plate, not the vehicle. You can put that plate on anything you want and swap it about ad hoc. if you want two vehicles ready to use, licence two plates, simple and fair.
Not sure how insurance works, must go per car though.

Would like to say a quick thanks for this thread, I've got 6 bikes sorned at the moment and the most recent purchase came with a sorn declaration valid until August 2012. Except now the v5 has been transferred into my name the sorn had lapsed, just re-declared online so I hope there's no officious fining!
SORN was introduced to make it the owners legal responsibilty to declare the vehicles status so that the DVLA know about every vehicle. It's caught me out once but never again so it works, like ANPR it's a discipline issue. There is no escape so they maximise revenue intake and detect the crims. They have caught so many crims with ANPR that have jumped bail and such that you can't believe it.

Sure but but if it's reg'd they know about it anyway. SORNed or taxed is just on/off, yes or no, two sides of a coin. It's either taxed or not, and as SORN is free it's just a big fat raft of useless beur beau... er... admin. Can't spell today. Just another imposition on people, and a pointless one. The system already caters for driving untaxed so SORN makes no odds at all in that regard.

yeah, pretty much just another annoying hoop to jump through, i hope my 3years with out sorn will go unnoticed..... i just thought if they weren't sending any renewals or whatever i didn't have to do anything.... it's a mine field tbh.

A question for the panel: Does a bike need to be SORNed if out of the country? Reg in UK. I saw something years ago stating that you did not need to tax a vehicle if it was not in the UK. I have a BMW K75 stored for 7yrs.

They don't always send reminders. I've accidentally done the same trick as Ragnarok, for the very same reason. Only reason I've noticed is that I can specifically remember not getting any SORN reminder between the times of my last tax disc reminder and the latest one for my other vehicle.
If you have a crappy memory and can barely remember from one day to the next, it's quite easy to get caught out when they don't send *anything* to the registered keeper of a vehicle. Perhaps if they put some of the funding from their tow and fine squad towards actually notifying keepers when unknown status vehicles exist, things might be a tad less of a problem. The cynic in me suggests that they wouldn't be able to screw people out of even more money if they did the decent thing though.
Unless there has been a radical change in the law recently, I'm quite sure that vehicles can legally only be removed from the highway.
Car parks, campsites etc are public places, and some motoring offences apply there (drink driving, public order offences), but it's not the highway, so you can speed, park where you want etc.
I appreciate there's a legal distinction between homes and commecial premises, but I doubt it applies here.

Punx0r, the Road Traffic Act applies pretty much anywhere with vehicular access, private property or not.
You can be charged with speeding, driving without due car etc in Asda car park, or the parking area associated with a block of flats. Mainly this was brought in to give plod more ways of dealing with boy racers congregating in Currys car park of an evening, but means that the RTA still applies just about anywhere, surfaced highway or not.

i hardly think they can come in your garden and lift stuff without a warrant . not mine they wouldnt

I tried to find more info on the net and it is unclear whether there is any right to remove an untaxed vehicle from private land. The 'general' picture appears to be that it CAN be removed from private land as long as it is not within the curtilage of a dwelling. So from this if you have a field then its fair game. not sure if a warrant would be required. In the case of the guy who told me about his experience, the allocated parking outside flats - they should not have lifted. The net is full of examples where they have done this though.
