Hard Drive not showing

My tower pc finally died a death this morning, it was expected and I have had a new one sitting spare.

I had back up drives in the old one and wanted to transfer at least one to the new pc which I have done, if I go system/drives it shows both and states they are working correctly.

The problem is if I go via computer through the desktop as normal it is not there, it is only showing the pre installed C drive and not the one I have just installed.

Obviously I suspect I have done something wrong but it was only an ide cable and a power plug, the one thing I faintly remember is a single drive had a specific place on a two plug ide, I have connected it to the middle plug on the ide and not the end one.

Is that my problem before I distmantle the neat job I made of a million miles of cables.

Have a look in disk manager or dick administrator whatever it's called. The disk may show there. If it does, the assign it a drive letter and then have another look in windows explorer to see if it's there...

As I mentioned, it does show it but not giving me the option to do anything other than look at it's properties.

a query here did you just install the disk without formatting it

is it an old disk or a new one?

what operating system are you using ?

Its a disc full of stuff that was my back up disc in the old pc and simply transferred to the new pc, both running windows 7 pro

If it's an old IDE drive have you set the jumper to slave or cable select ?

Does it show up in Computer management under the heading Disk management? (Start>Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Administrative Tools>Computer Management)

Often after non formatted disks are added they need to be initialised as a simple volume for windows to recognise it and for you to see it in my computer.

If it's in there as offline, bring it online by right clicking it and selecting the option to initialise/bring online

Just as they were when I took it out of the old pc

Also check that it's not trying to get a drive letter that already been used on the system by another another device. i.e: CD Rom is using D:\ and the new drive is also trying to use that. That'll cause it not to show up either.

What options do you have if you right click the writing for Disk 1?

Import foreign disc and convert foreign disc

Import seems the thing to press but I am wary of loosing all my stuff

I've done some googling and also think the way forward is importing it. Converting it stands a very good chance of destroying data.

Thanks for the help so far folks...have to go and pick grand daughter up, will be back later to try importing it unless there are any 'do not do it' warnings

Before you start doing anything like that, check that the jumper is not set to make that HDD the master. I see from your Disk Management screen grab that there is a yellow warning symbol on Disk1 - could be that it thinks it has 2 Master Drives. Check that the jumper is set to slave
