Happy times ahead....
after loosing both my Border Collies this last year....
YES, another dumped orfink.....10-12 weeks old
Now called Sam...plus he's the correct colour.....lol...
has a home with me....looking forward to the training.....were off to the beach tomorrow....(poo bag's in my pocket)

ive never had a collie, but im always amazed at how well they work and what they can be trained to do. guy that used to walk his dogs along the footpath on one of our shoots had a collie, a staff and a jack russel and the collie was almost telepathic to his commands.

we lost out french mastiff thursday after he rapidly declined in health. he was with us 6 years after i took him on to get him away from an incredibly dominant female, he wasnt able to eat, drink or sleep wothout being attacked by her, i doubt he had a month left when we took him. it would have been 6 years next month so he got a good run with us. back up to full weight and health within 2 months, trained to my voice, natural whistle, dog whistle and hand signals for recall, sit and find. for a big lump he couldnt half run.

it will be a fair while before we look for another but wont be a big dog this time. ive had german shepherds, rottweilers, labradors, mastiffs and breifly a great dane while we found someone to adopt him, but i think we will look for something around a spaniel size when the time comes.

I've trained several dogs as decent gun dogs .. Merle a male blue merle first cross golden retriever ( the bitch ) was the most challenging and difficult dog to train till he was well over four years old . Likely something to do with him still having his nuts attached at seven months old , till he was given to me or be put down . ( A returned puppy me things at least twice )
He wasn't the unusual small sheep dog either ,my hand was on his head when he stood up and I'm 5 foot ten tall .

Training him was good in the early morning for a few minutes or just before & into dusk . I always found it easier to see what he was about to do of his own free will, then praise him as he started doing it to get him used to it & then enjoy the praise for doing it , after discovering that he became a much better dog to train .

Someone on this Forum will take that as a challenge to build a bigger, better, more unnecessarily complicated automatic ball-throwing machine.

He's a smart looking hound! Let the fun commence. My last dog was a smooth coated collie & the most intellegent dog i ever had. We got him from the local rescue centre, he was about 9 months to a year old & had been running wild on Canvey sea front for two months before being caught by the dog warden. It was obvious that someone had started training him as he knew basic commands. I suspect he got dumped for some reason, maybe they were at work all day, as he was quite destructive at first.
That subsided very quickly as training commenced, he just wanted to please & loved to work, I took him shooting & he became the best gundog i have ever had albeit a bit hard mouthed due to getting bit by a grey squirrel. Came to work with me every day.
A dog trainer i know told me Collies come pre programmed to work, all you gotta do is press the right buttons!

My parents had 3 dogs, one after the other & none of them were the slightest bit interested in playing with a ball. Tried many times, but total indifference.

Worked with my lab too. He would never release to my hand so after he returned with whatever item I had sent him for he would sit and I would give him a command then stand there silently til he dropped at my feet then reward him. Once that was sorted he was quite easy to train to put things in my hand
