Spent Christmas with the girlfriend's parents in France. Attempted to smile for a few days while they all spoke French. Must make more effort to improve my French before it happens again. Understanding half the words isn't enough.

Another 2 weeks in the cast then I'll be in a boot to get some weight back on it.
It's not a complicated break so I'm hoping I won't need too much physio as I have an entry for a tough 21 mile off-road race in March so need to get back training asap.

Local company wanted £950 to fell 2 dozen 30 foot Leylandii trees so I asked Santa for a chainsaw. I just need a shredder to mince the branches up after salvaging the trunks in 10 foot lengths for making a compost bin. Birthday in January, so, any recommendations for a 'mincing machine'?
150 mixed baby trees on order. Beech, Hornbeam, Crab Apple and some others. Anyone bored enough to come and visit me? (Bring a spade.)

Been down in Leicestershire at Nursy's sister's place... too much food, plenty of drink, sod-all exercise makes for a lumpy, lethargic Wedg1e.

I don't mind the time off but if they abolished xmas tomorrow it wouldn't bother me...

They are also dangerous, please get some goggles at least Rob. I made the mistake of wearing rigger boots with mine once and you don't do that twice. They soon fill up with chippings I wear a helmet and mesh visor, it's surprising how far the wood chips travel.

I went on cs30 and cs31 training was a very interesting week and learnt lots. Anyone using a saw should have some basic training and wear the proper safety gear if that to expensive and much hassle then don't use a chain saw

wholeheartedly agree. a chainsaw blade is so designed as to grab the wood and self feed. Catch a limb when it kicks back and youll be through to bone before you can get the brake on. Nuff said.

I read somewhere that the average survivable chainsaw injury requires 110 stitches. I was shown how to use one in my teens and over 40 years later have all my appendages still attached. I use mine for firewood cutting in the back yard now. I used to climb and tie the ropes on to pull trees with a truck while they were cut and it makes me wince to see people cutting overhead and carrying running saws although I had no official training.

took to dismantling bits from Si's old van just to see how they worked then spent the rest of the day trying to get a radio un lock code

think ill stick to old citroen technology that needs spanners and hammers rather than laptops and eprom readers when im bored

A high percentage of 'kickback' injuries are to the upper body & neck/face,its important to understand the tension & compression in the wood to be cut,good work positioning,the danger zones on the saw bar,& keeping the saw sharp.
I work as an arborist climber,& have seen & been exposed to the rapid reaction a badly used saw can undertake,in my opinion it pays to at least work with a seasoned cutter for a while to learn the pitfalls,& never use a saw with any mechanical defects.
