We had the steps from the back door replaced a while back and made wider, so the old handrail that was free standing was removed.
Ready moulded handrails were not quite the right shape for our 110 yo house and were not treated for outside use.
I have a Metalclad spindle moulder with a power feed that I got from a furniture makers auction in 1988, when I used to do wood bothering. I don't use it much, but it was perfect for this. I have large rounding over cutter, and this did the top curve. I got a 1/2" router bit from aliexpress to do the side curve. The top curve with these cutters was to flat, like the ready made mouldings.
Of course, there is no good wood available and what there was available was rubbish or still had the birds nesting in it. In the end, I bought some framing timber, glued 2 pieces together and ran the lot through the planer and left it for a few weeks to dry out.
I lost the making photos, but the spindle moulder worked really well. I couldn’t bu a proper set of knives to use it to do the whole ting in one pass, but the combination worked well. I made 2 in the end as the first was to large.
The brackets were also from Aliexpress. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003416272448.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.0.0.129f1802ShuuZW. As they screw onto the weatherboard, I heated the bend and altered them to allow for the 7 degree face of the weatherboard so the handrail sits level.
