Looking for a simple solution to deliver approx 250kg to 500kg of pulling force.
Think extracting a thin 6 metre long filter from a housing in metre sections, feed rope through the centre and pull.

Needs to be lightweight, simple, and reasonably fast acting.

I'm thinking perhaps a boat winch, with a plate and eye on the back that can be fixed back using a strop..Once there's a bit of tension on it it shouldn't want to flip..

With a steel cable wound onto a drum, pulling out the 6m length when you want to drop it down the housing will be tricky and the steel rope will not want to stay straight (it will curl up).

If the filter is in 1m sections, consider a (perhaps bespoke sewn) sling, with loops every metre. Then your winch only needs 1m of lift and you just reset it.

Edit: they do make boat winches with what looks like a car seatbelt as the 'rope'. That would stay straight when unwound.

Use a rope with a few loops knotted into it currently. Rope needs to be detached to pull each filter section off of the rope as it comes out.

Looked at the lever style like that, but thought that might be a bit tedious to operate compared to a windey handle? Never used one like that.

Slow going though arn't they. Housings are horizontal, they can be a bit of a pain to use on there side I've found. Got a few but they're way too big for this application.

Lever blocks ("comealongs") would probably be my choice. Very versatile for lots of jobs.

To pull 500kg using a rotating handle needs a reduction gear. A come along uses the length of the arm to give equivalent mechanical advantage. You cannot change the laws of physics - if your arm cannot move 500kg 6m, it has to move a lower weight a greater distance.

It would be good to refine the weight a little. 250kg is within reason for one person pulling on a 'set of fours' rope pulley block. 500kg on the same thing is hard work for one person.

There are many similar 'haul systems' used in the tree world that are light and easy to use. You can build your own with two double sheeve pulleys and use friction knots to capture progress.

I think there are cordless drill operated winches available. If you could find one that uses a synthetic (dyneema) rope, that could work well.

Perhaps having individual 1m length straps with a toggle connection would make removing each section of the filter easier.

Yeah, i was thinking a geared winch obviously. I suppose the problem with that is the handle being offset it'll try and twist as you apply force I suppose... where the lever type would be pulling inline.

It's hard to know the force as it varies. Sometimes it's easy to just pull them straight out by hand, others takes a lot of effort. Access is usually awkward too.

Looks like the reverse osmosis water filters at work.
They made a air cylinder device that attached to the tube end (flange ?) and it pushed
the new ones in, the old dropped out the other end.

Exactly. Ones pictured are pretty simple. Older style ones don't have a proper flangeto locate a push tool onto. Know for some that are only a few inches from a wall too, which is where rope comes in.

Seen a few, be interested in seeing your version.

Some large hand operated winches were a two-person operation, with a handle either side of the drum. If space permits, that could be an option to balance the forces.

but chain management is always an issue (you could shorten the endless chain if necessary).

Edit: if the required force is a bit variable, perhaps a two-speed winch could be used: fast but 'weak' or slow but 'strong'. Then you would minimise or optimise operator input according to conditions.

This does sound like a job for a capstan, might be worth anchoring one down in a permanent position and using a redirect pulley to change positions for other filters. Nothing worse than wrestling with a loose winch ( that was winch @MattF not wench ).
