Hand warmers - charcoal fuel type

I remember using these as a child when out fishing, they were much better than the other sorts (disposable bags, or the gel pouches that you can boil to reuse) but often a pain to get lighted. Were they as good as I remember?

I believe theres are also lighter fluid and lighter gas types, which may be much quicker and easier to light, but never tried them.

Zippo makes a hand warmer run on lighter fluid.

Not charcoal type as you asked, but I can recommend these USB rechargeable ones off amazon. We have had them for a couple of years now for when dog walking, really good.

I always used the Zippo Style that run off lighter fluid but mine are all Cheap Ebay ones, lent them to a friend who took his kids to Norway he loved them

I've used the Zippo petrol ones for years. They are very good, if sometimes a bit tricky to get going. I was given a pair of rechargeable ones last year and am very impressed by how good they are.

Just reading about the strong magnets on them . . . and wondering about the occasionally used magnetic strip on the back of my cards . . .

Used charcoal ones in the past and have a Zippo one I have never got the hang of.

I now only use USB charge ones, they double up as power banks. Not had any issues.

I'd have though the lighter fluid type would be easier to light and keep going? I dont like the idea of it in my pocket whilst Im up a tree incase it leaked.

I'm not convinced the USB sort would last very long. My use will be for working outside all day.

I’ve got a couple of highlander charcoal ones, when they work they work very effectively to keep your pockets/hands warm but they can be a bit of a pain to get going/keep going.

Though they don’t give off any visible smoke they make your hands/pockets stink of smoke.

have a charcoal one , great as long as it keeps going , brother hd lighter fuel one and that was ok but spendy , tried a heated waist coat last week end from a friend , now eordering one , as your core is warm it warms the blood which obviously cirrculates , brilliant , only trouble is looking at ebay which one!

I've one, just a cheapy from Amazon.
Works very well. As you say keeps your core warm.

I also have a pair of similarly heated socks

I've had both charcoal and the petrol ones for years, but was given a usb one the other year for christmas and they haven't been out of the cupboard since. The other thing I discovered last year was fingerless mittens, they're so much better than fingerless gloves (or gloves with fingers for that matter) The only thing I miss is the smell of the charcoal handwarmer I used to love the smell don't know if its because it reminded me of all the field sports I used to do when I was a lot younger, when the handwarmers were really welcome.

Sodium acetate packs. They are ok but dont last very long, and I seem to trigger them accidently, so they are not ready when I need them.

I have a USB charging hand warmer and I can't fault it, I don't even use it on full power it's so good.
