Hammerite thinners

Can anyone shed some light on why you supposedly 'MUST' use proper hammerite thinners at £stupid per litre when normal thinners seems to work just fine? I've thinned it with synthetic thinners and it's fine and I've just found another forum where someone's used cellulose thinners with no problems. I'm just curious as to why the can says to ONLY use proper stuff.

I'm thinking the same. Greedy sods, it's like they don't charge enough for the paint in the first place! £7.50 for 1/2 a litre of thinners when you can buy 5 litres of standard for under £15?? Hmmm, let me think about that one.

Is Hammerite good for spraying in cars? (obviously not the main outer coat) but inside/underneath for rust protection..
I was thinking of painting all the floor pans in something tough after all the welding is done.

If its rusty use POR15, pricey but it sticks like the proverbial to a blanket. I've done the floors in my truck with it. Inside if you're planning on keeping it and off roading I'd check out how much it would cost to get the inside done in truck bed liner. Thats stuff is as tough as old boots and waterproof so you can just hose it out.

Hehe, wouldn't fancy cleaning up after that! The funny thing is that if you google 'hammerite thinners' almost all the forum hits are people saying you absolutely MUST use proper stuff but when asked why, they basically say they don't know but it says so on the tin. The few who don't are people like myself and probably yourself who thought, hmmm, I wonder if normal stuff will work, oh what a surprise, it does!

Most paint co's specify their own thinners. It invariably turns out to be turps sub/ xylene/ cellulose etc. Trouble is, once in a while if you use the wrong thing, your paint finish will go up the swannee, especially if you're spraying.

Some manufacturers have dozens of different thinners. Their point would be that if you're going to buy expensive paint, you might as well do the job properly and use the correctly formulated thinners.

The wrong formulation either just won't work - wrong base - or will affect the chemistry of the paint, or will sod up the drying time, or create a layer under which the paint won't dry, or separate the paint from the substrate.... the list goes on.

But if I were slapping on a bit of hammerite, i'm not sure i'd be so fussy...

Hmmm, i'll never use hammershite again after discovering POR15. Had my 240Z front suspension blast cleaned and painted up with hammerite, rust was coming through after a couple of months of being sat on the drive - grrr! Discovered POR15 and although the prep work is somewhat intensive the finish is great (and it goes a long way) and no rust has come through on anything since treating. Don't get it on your skin though as it doesn't come off until the skin does. It also has very nasty fumes as its isocyanite based, use a decent mask outside. I've heard a real horror story in the US about spraying it on a forum out there so much so that its stickied on their paint and body section.

I've found modern Hammerite very brittle and it chips far too easily for that sort of application. I've successfully used Hammerite Stonechip, which is a flexible coating that you then paint over with normal paint so it can be exactly the same colour as the rest of the car. Similar to what many modern cars have underneath and on the underside of doors, etc.

If you used that POR stuff under it (I've never used it myself), it sounds like your bodywork would be invincible

Can you buy pre-mixed paints for spray guns as i'm needing to spray something soon that will require 7-8 400mL cans, I have a compressor and can get a gun for £20 + Vat, supposely as good as an aeresol spray finish.

I haven't seen any, although the clear lacquer I use (U-Pol) is intended to be sprayed without thinning. If you're talking about Hammerite, I think it says on the tin how much to thin for spraying. Other paints suitable for spraying will say on the datasheet how to thin them.

If there are paints available pre-mixed for spraying, I'll bet they're a lot more expensive than mixing them yourself. Think how much more expensive per litre aerosols are than brushable paint.

A liner for the bed of a (pickup) truck. Usually plastic or ally chequer plate. Protects the load bed from damage.

Nah, its a spray on thick textured polyurethane/latex coating thats incredibly tough, waterproof, skid proof and can be coloured to match. Its used a lot in the USA and is just coming in over here, brands like Herculliner are good. Has to be sprayed on by a specialist though (you can get diy kits to roller on but most are pretty pants) Some even have Kevlar in them. There are now outlets over here that advertise in the 4x4 mags. http://www.herculiner.com/ for an idea.

The drop in chequer plate/plastic ones are rubbish as they generally trap water under them and make the bed rust out unseen.

Never heard of that, sounds like a good idea though. My plastic liner in my mitsi L200 is wrecked but then again I've had lots of heavy plate in the back plus machinery, roof tiles and lots more. I've got a carryboy top on mine so hopefully it's pretty good underneath.
