Hamerite smooth

I have no problem using smooth hammerite if something’s been bare metalled, no priming or flatting, not sure I’d put it over old paint though.
Is epoxy specified in insurance repairs by manufacturers, and have they done away with e coat etc.

No, epoxy is really the domain of specialist bodyshops where time can be allowed for curing.

I used a hammer finish grey Hammerite to paint some chassis stands about 20 years ago. I sprayed it through my regular spray gun using synthetic thinners. The finish came out well and I have been surprised how well it has weathered over the years. I had no idea it may contain silicone. I sprayed without a booth and cleaned the gun with acetone. I’ve used the same gun for plenty of other jobs since then, and not had any silicone contamination issues.

Hammerite is now water based! Halfrauds were selling of the "old" Hammerite cheap about a year ago.

Hammerite was never a great paint anyway it took far too long to cure. Go to your local auto factor and ask them to mix you up a quality solvent based machinery enamel.

I’ve always had good products from Buzzweld. Maybe this would suit better than Hammerite…

my myford needed a few parts touching up and i wanted it colour matched as the machine is in mint condition apart from the belt guard and gearbox cover. used paragon paints tractol with xylene thinners, cost a packet but nice ..anything else is enamel whatever i can get cheap

I used Smootherite Silver (spray can) on my bike engine and forks, no problems so far (2 years +). Would use again.

i sandblasted my cast iron cylinder on my norton and painted it with black smoothrite and its still good . painted it in 20 10

Sometimes I think the preparation is more important than the paint. Sandblasting gives the best prep for painting .

Thank you for the replies, I have now sprayed the black no problem,
I also baught 5 ltr of black smothrite for 60 pounds from b@q that's with 10% discount
I thought that was a good price
