That’s a bit like booking.com where you book hotel rooms and stuff at (supposedly) advantageous rates when you are a regular member. I have ‘grade 2 genius’ or whatever it is, having booked maybe 50 rooms through them over the years.

Looking for hotels in London last week, 3 or 4 rooms my daughter priced up direct, every single one would cost me more via booking.com.

So whats their purpose?

booking.com frequently have better cancellation terms than booking direct with the hotel. Not always, but sometimes.

Nowt wrong with Halfords, that’s just a trade card versus retail offer anomaly. Maybe not the 1st place to go but with a trade card they are quite competitive and they are open 7 days.

They are what they are. I didn’t use them as first choice but if you’re stuck at 2pm on a Sunday they’re handy.

I have a trade card but like OP I have found the discount a bit hit and miss. The best discounts were on tool I found.

Im also a fan of their tools, the ratchet I have had since I was 16 (22 years) has had proper use and abuse and has never let me down

Find them to be overpriced on just about everything. Find yourself a good local motor factors, way superior just don't go looking for something on a Sunday.

Ive not come across a decent independent for years, most supply the cheapest Chinese rubbish at vast prices

A few exceptions still exist, Autovaux for example but the one I used for many years stopped selling proper brands

I use them for tools and they are great if you need something over the weekend. If people don't buy from them, they will eventually fold. That would be a great shame imho.

last resort for me , wider choice with better prices online...as said if you need it at 3pm on a sunday theyre handy , otherwise im going elsewhere

I had a day trip to Carmarthen five or six months ago to look at a tractor. It was a Sunday … Halfway there, the driver side wiper blade started separating and by the time I reached West Wales in the early afternoon was beginning to become a serious issue I was using wipers an absolute minimum.

Bought the tractor and suddenly thought of Halfords. There was a branch within ten miles, got there at 3.30pm… ten mins and they had a new blade fitted for me.. paid the fitting fee to ensure I had bought the right blade. . Very very helpful.

keep using them…. They need to continue to exist!!!

I mean how do they justify their operation to people who use them?

Stupidly I always assumed it was cheaper to go through them, because they have told me it is..... and it has been in the past, but maybe they’re getting desperate, like so many other establishments nowadays.

Sorry, I was being silly. Clever marketing is part of it, that and the convenience of 'one stop' search/booking service. A bit like the Halfords 'open at the weekend' strategy discussed above.

I suppose its being able to compare hotels in the area needed......without any area knowledge....plus the no deposit cancellable booking can be useful.....especially these days.

Yes the above ^^^ I used to use one of their competitors when I was working away, ten minutes on one web site and several hotels could be compared in a given radius of the job, hotel would be booked in far less time than visiting all the separate web sites, you pays your money and saves your time.
