Thought I'd post a review of the cheapo 75 quid tool chests halfords sell.
Basically over the black Friday weekend, I was umming and arring over what toolbox to get, and when I had finally decided to get the professional 3 set stack for 200 quid it was sold out, so I got myself one of the 75 quid cabinets instead.
My observations are:
Build quality is not great, as to be expected for the money. the metal feels like 0.7mm or thereabouts. It dents fairly easily. if you were moving the cab around a lot, it'd probably break.
I really like the ball bearing shelves - it actually feels pretty good.
Another thing that is good is that all r casters swivel, which makes it much easier to get into corners .
The locking mechanism is annoying (two bars to pull out), so I might just leave it unlocked.
The shelves don't really feel that sturdy, so I'm not expecting to put a lot of weight on them tbh. The specs say 9kg per shelf and 75kg in total, and that sounds just about right.
However, for storing little hand tools and bits and bobs it's very handy. The top box will probably end up storing random little lathe/mill tools, and the bottom little oil cans etc.
For the money I'm pretty chuffed. It's nowhere near the quality of the higher priced units, and in all honesty 150 feels like a massive rip off, but at 75 quid it's just about priced right.
I'm still aiming to pick up one of the professional (or maybe industrial if I'm feeling flush) in the Xmas sales, so hopefully they have decent deals on again.
Some pictures of the assembly etc.
