Half a hole

As the title says i needed to put a few semicircles on the edge of some flat to sit some round bar in.

Couldn't be bothered to shift everything to get at the milling machine and set it up.
Welded two bars together mainly where the holes wanted to be and drilled through in stages up to 20 mm. Then split the two bars apart.

Would there be an easier way to have done it?

Depends what gear youve got wyn.
Could of gassed them out? I take it the rod is welded in the notch after?

mag drill would do that for you I know because I did it to the bench accidentally

Tack the ends of the bars to stop them sliding relative to one another and use a drill press with a vice to hold the bars together where you drill the hole.

Only two welds to remove then.

Depends on your arsenal of gear as Hitch says. I would push them through with a Geka, alternately punching through from each side to reduce the bend in the bar.
Or mag drill
Or pillar drill
Or oxy
Or buy punched bar

Hitch.....yeah the bar is welded in after, thinking about it now i could have just cut a "V" with the grinder and covered it all up with the weld.

scarecrow...Haven't forked out on one yet. I have an adaptor for the pillar drill to fit broaches but the pillar drill is an mm one and doesn't handle it too well.

rtbcomp...do you reckon drilling without going through a weld would work...less hassle

Welderpaul...As you say the gear i have for this was a bit limited only pillar drill or milling machine.

I only needed 7 holes....or is that 3 1/2

I think it's time to get a mag drill.

Obviously don't know what the job is, but in your situation, i think i'd have vee-d the bar, if finish etc would allow it. the correct vee would set the proper depth and still centre the bar.
