All joking aside, if someone abuses a trainee, an apprentice or another employee - that's wrong and illegal. It demonstrates a degree of ignorance and contempt for others on the part of those in charge or otherwise responsible.

On the other hand, if you are fortunate enough to be being taught a skill or a trade by a skilled and competent tradesman then you should pay attention, keep quiet and don't offer any of your own opinions until you are at least as skilled as them.
In any sizeable organisation, arguments might get you suspended, abuse and physical arguments would get you the sack. Others might be queuing for the opportunity to learn.

dont mention hammers on a job all the joiners and the-guy i worked with grabbed me and tried dunking me in a 45 gallon drum of water .i got loose and kicked a few of them and they dropped me on the floori picked the joiners hammer up and chased one of them -then flung it at him . ohh s,hit it flew past his ear just missing his head and would have killed him i-ts something ive never forgot after 45 years . how easy it is being stupid to apprentices and what can happen. if i had hit him with it i wonder what i would be doing today and where food for thought

I recall one nippy apprentice, he had a degree on getting on peoples nerves. One day we got a hold of him, threaded a 2 metre length if 50x50 alloy hollow box through both arms of his ovvies, with him still in them. We then hung him up using fork lift, then took him outside, as it was freezing cold winter. Another not so nippy app, using nail gun, nailed him to concrete floor, through his ovvies. Was a learning curve for them both, they settled down!!

I think many apprentices went through this kind of thing years ago, you start off as fly weight (15 YEAR OLD) and come out as a cruiser weight(21 year old) Hopefully undefeated was lucky to finish my apprenticeship had it not been for some of the understanding foremen at the time.

On one of the ships I was on there was a right wind up merchant. One particular evening he pushed things a bit too far and ended up getting taken down the hanger and spread eagled across 4 helicopter lashing points on the deck, with a cable tie around his, erm, packet....

People were going out every 20 minutes or so to tighten it up a notch ....

One of the guys at work was telling me they used to have someone there that would coat welding benches in paint thinner (or something simmilar) so when they went to strike an arc it would light up.

Most I get it is someone turning the gas off.

Sorry forgot to add, was also part of procedures that all welding was done in downhand position ie flat.
Short circuit setting for root passes, spray transfer for fill n cap
I know it sounds a bit iffy but used to work very well. Was more often than not, heavy steel over 15mm thick.

Not a job, but learning welding at college I had:

Swarf thrown into my cubicle
Gas turned off
Power or wire feed cranked right up
My name written - graffiti - on the welders (only in chalk thankfully).

Idiots. Never had anything much to do with them, and certainly did nothing to cause such behavior. It seems that there are some people (I'll use that term loosely) who are just ******s.

Same thing happened to me Bill, a little twerp (why is it always small fellas ?) decided he didn't like me learning in tech, we were all supposed to be rebel tough guys like him. Bike vandalised in the car park, helmet filled with the sweepings of the floor, tools interfered with. The other lads were embarrassed but didn't want to "grass" on him to me. Anyway he decided to tell me what was what and i snapped, i don't remember much about it, completely lost me temper and he like all bullys pooed his pants and tried to run off through a door into an ajoining workshop, so i demolished the door to try to get to him.
This "hardman" wound up crying, hiding behind the skirts of a tiny female receptionist who must have 60 if she was a day, demanding the police were called. I nearly lost my apprenticeship over it, but the lecturer or teacher spoke up for me, the hardman had been a thorn in his side since the word go and secretly i think he was happy it happened. All i had to do was pay for the damage and replace the 12" files i had broken throwing them at the little ball of wax.

there was a tw...at at college made my life a misery pi..ssed in my flask let motorbike tires- down soldered my file clips together and threatened me in the end i put a chair across his head in class the teacher never even saw it happen he threatened me after -class so i just showed him my bog chain and handle with a lump of lead on the end and said your gonna get it if u do . in them days u got threat-ened by skinheads with knives so all bikers had -there own defences-lol mods rockers and skins them were the days

I did a block-release course at college in the early seventies and there were 24 of us in the class. 20 worked for one company and knew each other pretty well, I worked for another company and had never met any of them before, the remaining two were Nigerians just over to the UK to do the course.

About 10 of the twenty were a pain in the @rse, thinking they were pretty smart and funny, nothing physical though, just continual attempts to belittle and demean everyone not in their group. When you're trying to make the most of a valuable course leading to a qualification it doesn't help to have continual crap going on. Looking back, I don't know how the teaching staff put up with it.

The Nigerians got it pretty badly and ultimately only did year 1 of the two-year course.

You had to stand up to them. The company they worked for was the absolute best payer for miles around, so they mostly had the best cars, best holidays, best clothes, etc. and the knob heads would rub it in at every opportunity. My take-home wage was about half theirs.
Come the end of the course though, the bully/gobby/big-head crew mostly failed the course and didn't progress to the (very) well-paid jobs they thought they were going to fall into.
