Was shown the basic principles of how to MIG weld. Given some scrap box section to practice laying down a run first. Once I'd got to grips with remembering to keep the torch at a constant distance as well as move it along we progressed to doing something similar on 16 gauge sheet. He deliberately gave me some sheet that was as rusty as a cistern on the Titanic just so I could experience what it's like trying to weld on dirty metal. Then progressed to clean sheet, tacking the sides to create an open topped box which I then welded up fully. Then did a little joining of box section. Even managed to do a structural weld in 8mm plate which he reckoned was better than his attempt.
He then showed me how stainless conducts the heat and is easy to blow though, before showing me a little trick to prevent this.
Thoroughly enjoyable morning and very informative. Certainly enought for me to crack on at home once I've managed to source an old steel bench or a big piece of plate to top off my existing bench.
Thanks Graham, much appreciated.
