Hi,
Hot Mail is a MS application. Both Thunderbird and Firefox are 'stand alone' so should not have any effect on any other programme. If you store your opened e-mails opt to store them on your machine, not on your isp's server. You will need to set your outgoing and incoming server address, but that info should be in Hot Mail's help file.

OK Chris, thanks, I'll have a look at it, I don't really like messing with my email things, I get in a pickle with setting up outlook express mail, pop3 http things, just setting that it up bad enough for me, so I just use hotmail.

OK, if your not too keen, best not fiddle too deeply. However, if you do decide to give Thunderbird a go you can delete it with no ill effects.
Snowcat, if you are using Win 2000 you had better check your recources, XP makes a lot of demands on the machine, not so much on the speed of the motherboard, but on the amount of ram. I've just fitted the full 2 gig of memory and now the machine runs like a Ferrari on heat. Google Crucial memory and have a look at the index page there's a good little programme to check the ram fitted to your machine.
