GYS SmartMIG 162

Evening All

Machine Mart are having a VAT-free day this Thursday so, after 12 months deliberation, I'd finally decided to go for a Clarke 160TM. However, I've just spotted the GYS SmartMIG 162 on Weldequip's site. Now I'm not sure again. Arrgghhhhhh.

Attraction of the GYS is the reduced size and weight, and that it has a Euro torch. The weight difference looks huge, which is especially appealing.

Apart from some ARC welding experience many years ago, I consider myself a complete novice. Lucklily I have a mate with plenty of past MIG experience who's happy to help us (my 14 yr old wants to learn too). Initially we'll be looking to work with some 3-4mm angle, and 3mm box section to experiment with. Our first projects will be a hanger trolley and a bike trailer. I'd imagine in the future it's possible we'll want to do some thin stuff, too.

The latest thread regarding the GYS in this section was about a month ago, so I was wondering if anyone's picked one up in the last month, and what they think of it? Any other advice/opinions regarding the two machine would also be welcome.

hi i,m also thinking of the gys smartmig from weldequip to replace my ferm mig 150 bought from screwfix which is i believe similiar to a sealey 150,weldequip give it a good write up.any one any views on this kit,cheers

I have a transit van that needs a fair bit of welding and i am thinking of going for the gys over the clarke mainly because of the euro torch and better feed mechanism i would like the portamig but i cant really justify it for the amount of welding i do, once i have finished the van about 20 hrs work i will probobly only use it for around a couple of hours a year. the supplier on here seems to offer a good service as well.

I did buy one of these in the end, and I'm very pleased with it. Nice machine for the money. Nice and compact, too.

Got mine from Weldequip. Got excellent service from Steve.

Not sure....maybe you could contact GYS uk they are in Warwick....still far away from you but closer already than France!
